Parks Foundation – The Big Give
I am delighted to say that the Bristol & Bath Parks Foundation is part of Big Give Green Match Fund 2021
This is an ideal opportunity to support the Parks Foundation with the knowledge that donations will be doubled by the Green Match Fund.
One donation, twice the impact!
From 22nd to 29th April donations via the Big Give to the Love Your Park Community Fund will be doubled.
The Foundation aims to offer small grants to enable park groups and others to run projects in their parks. £5,000 has already been raised, and this campaign aims to double the pot available.
If sufficient funds are raised, applications for grants will be invited from park groups from late summer – more money raised means more funds available.
Please spread the word, this is an ideal opportunity for people to give something back to parks, with double the impact.

Love Nature Love Your Park Recordings

City Nature Challenge
The international City Nature Challenge is taking place on Fri 30th April to Mon 3rd May 2021.
Taking part is easy! Simply download the iNaturalist app to your smartphone or tablet and use it to upload photos of any wildlife you see from your windows, gardens and during your daily outdoor exercise.
You don’t have to be an expert, as the app will give you some handy suggestions of what it thinks you’ve seen, and you can join the iNaturalist online community to learn more about the wildlife around you. Best of all, the records you submit will help inform local and national conservation work!
Join the Natural History Consortium team for a free online training session!
Learn some handy tips on how to record wildlife using the free iNaturalist app. This zoom session will teach you useful iNaturalist skills.
There are 2 sessions:
- Wed 21st April, 2pm
- Thurs 22nd April, 6pm

Photoshoots for Parks Cafés Website
We’re getting a brand new website for the parks cafe service, each café will have its own webpage, it is currently being written and we hope to have it completed by the end of June.
To complete the website we would like some updated photography of our kiosks, cafes, food, staff and customers. We’re looking for volunteers to be in these photos, obviously we’re likely to have customers but this just guarantees that we’re going to get the pictures we want.
All the volunteers need to do in advance is fill in a photo consent form and either bring it signed on the day or email it to me. I will have forms on the day but it’s a big help if they’re completed beforehand.
To stay COVID – 19 safe, volunteers will be put into socially distanced pairs (unless they are in the same household, in which case they don’t need to socially distance) and we will be following coronavirus safety guidance for the catering industry.
Please could volunteers bring their own face coverings, hand sanitiser will be provided.
Free hot drinks, snacks, lunches and ice creams will be provided!
The photoshoots will be happening at 10:30am on the following dates and at the following places:
- Blaise Castle Estate Cafe – Tuesday 27th April
- St George Bake Box- Wednesday 28th April
- Oldbury Court Kiosk -Thursday 29th April
- Canford Park Kiosk - Friday 30th April
- Ashton Court Courtyard Cafe, Coach House Cafe and Ashton Court Golf Café- Thursday 3rd of June
- Hengrove Beach Hut Cafe- Friday 4th of June
I will be there with a clipboard and a high vis jacket and our lovely photographer Chris.
If members of the Friends of groups get involved then they are welcome to use the photos too, we might just have ‘copyright BCC’ at the bottom of the photos.

Castle Park
As you may have seen in the press, the plans for the development of the St Mary-le-Port are now available online. These can be viewed at http://www.stmaryleport.co.uk under the proposals dropdown.
There are two public consultation sessions planned on Wednesday 21st April, between 12.30pm and 2.00pm and Thursday 22nd April, between 6.00pm and 7.30pm. Signup for these events can be found at the bottom of the page in the link above.
Friends of Castle Park have been involved in some of the early discussions on these proposals. The plans aim to integrate the west end of Castle Park into the development and have ‘active frontages’ to the park, rather than blank walls. The developers have also responded to comments on earlier versions of the plans by moving one of the buildings to allow more of the trees on Wine Street to be retained.

Poetry Festival
As I mentioned in an earlier update parks are featuring in this year’s Lyra: Bristol Poetry Festival 2021. Poet Beth Calverley, has been working with groups to produce poems for selected parks – the outcome of the conversation we had about Troopers Hill can be seen here.
Beth, is also hosting a writing workshop on Sunday 18th April 2021.
If you would like to share anything you write about your park or green space then you can use #BristolWriteOutside on social media during the festival.

Frome Forum
Come to an open virtual meeting of the Frome Forum. Open to all, the Frome Forum is a community of individuals, local groups and organisations, coordinated by the Avon Frome Partnership. The Forum aims to work with local communities to share information and enable joined up action on the ground to help create a healthy, thriving river and catchment accessible to all.
The forum is your opportunity to engage with:
- Town and parish councils
- Partnerships and charities working in the water environment sector
- Other environmentally focused community groups within the Bristol Frome catchment.
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 11th May, 7-8.30pm, and will include updates from the River Frome Reconnected and Avon Frome Partnerships and a workshop to identify key issues and identify community based projects already occurring.

National Federation of Parks & Green Spaces
On Saturday I attended the AGM of the NFPGS as representative of the Forum.
This is an important body in getting the importance of friends groups and the work we do on the national agenda.
There was some good discussion on the need for proper funding of parks from national Government – for day to day maintenance as well as capital improvements.
