A Message from the President

Hello, spring!
I hope you all are as excited as I am for more sunshine, porch sitting, and warmer weather!
It’s hard to believe my entire SMPS presidency has been through a computer screen, but I couldn’t have done it without the support of my faithful Board of Directors and our wonderful members! I can’t thank you all enough for your flexibility, adaptability, feedback, and support as we have navigated this virtual professional development year together. We still have LOTS to look forward to—site visits, our annual membership event, and our volunteer appreciation event, and we are looking to YOU to help us shape the rest of the year. When you have a free few minutes (I know they’re rare these days!), please take our COVID questionnaire here to help us shape our programming for the rest of the year.
We really appreciate it!
In other exciting news, we are looking to welcome some new members to our Board—President-Elect, Co-Directors of Programs, Director of Communications, Treasurer, and Director of Membership! If you’re interested in possibly joining the board, please email me at caitlin.rath@kimley-horn.com to chat.

SMPS HQ Presents:
Be the Positive Disruptor with Change Management
Rolling out change whether it’s a new technology, process, or policy can meet resistance.
In order to positively disrupt the people and/or processes within your organization, a strong change management plan is critical. During this presentation, we’ll review Dr. John Kotter’s eight-step process detailing how to build the right team, create urgency, and set a vision and goals in order to generate a culture of change.
Kotter argues that 70% of change initiatives fail due to the lack of necessary preparation or the inability to see the project through correctly. We’re in a season of change, and it’s time learn tips to help us manage and thrive in the disruption.

MySMPS Sector Communities
During a recent meetup with some of our chapter leaders, we heard that having the opportunity to connect around sectors would be a benefit to members. As a result, we’re introducing nine sector communities on MySMPS. If you work in these sectors, please join the communities to network, look for teaming opportunities, solicit marketing advice, showcase your thought leadership, and share best practices with your sector peers.
