Dutch Sweets, Olive Marmalade & Maple Syrup

Seems like April should be called "the month of 4-day weeks". We are back after another Monday off (though, only for us). Time for our weekly product focus newsletter.

Today we would like to introduce six new products. An extension to our Dutch products (this time some sweets), a different type of marmalade and finally, maple syrup all the way from Canada.

Dutch Sweets

After our previous Product Focus Monday on all the Dutch produce, we had a client asking us about Drop from Holland. And once we had that in the store, another client asked us about Schoolkrijt. The results ... within a week we expanded our Dutch products with three well known sweets from Holland.

Zachte Zoete drop has a taste of pure liquorice extract, "salmiak salt" and anise and Zachte Zoute drop has a full salmiac ammoniac flavour, while Schoolkrijt is a spicy liquorice stick covered in a sweet, crisp, minty shell.

All three products, Zachte Zoete Drop, Zachte Zoute Drop & Schoolkrijt, have the distinct "salty" taste you often find in liquorice from Holland. Salty liquorice, salmiak liquorice or salmiac liquorice, is a variety of liquorice flavoured with the ingredient "salmiak salt", and is a common confection found in the Nordic countries, Benelux, and northern Germany.

Founded in 1890 in Amsterdam by Gerrit van Voornveld, and with many things happening inbetween over the years, Venco is today a leading liquorice brand in the Netherlands and abroad.

Olive Marmalades

Traditionally marmalades are fruit preserves made from the juice and peel of citrus fruits boiled with sugar and water. Over the years we were introduced to a new generation of marmalades, less traditional in the South African context. The most popular would be Onion Marmalade (of which we have in the Deli).

I came across this Olive marmalade while visiting another Deli on yet another public holiday Monday. Being a fan of anything olive and anything chilli, I just had to try the Olive & Chilli Marmalade.

I expected a taste closer to Tapenade, but what I got was something completely different! It was a winner from the first moment and we decided to stock it in the Deli.

It pairs beautifully with artisan breads and it is the perfect addition to cheese platters and breakfast spreads. If you love olives, this one is for you.

Canadian Maple Syrup

It should not be necessary to say "Canadian" when referring to Maple Syrup, but, as with many other things, there are so many imitations out there that it is sometimes better to validate your product.

Maple syrup is a syrup usually made from the xylem sap of sugar maple, red maple, or black maple trees. Our maple syrup has an amber colour and a rich taste. It is absolutely lovely with cheese on a croissant!
