San Mateo County Office of Education Recognizes Autism Awareness Month
|

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in 54 Americans live with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a complex, lifelong developmental disability that typically appears during early childhood and can impact a person’s social skills, communication, relationships, and self-regulation. Due to a lack of awareness and understanding, students living with ASD are 63 percent more likely to be bullied than typically developing peers and face additional challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This April, SMCOE observes Autism Acceptance Month to increase understanding, acceptance, and inclusive programs for people living with ASD and those who care for them. To address the San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury findings regarding hate incidents in San Mateo County schools, SMCOE is hosting a two-part symposium (second date TBD) where districts can come together and:
- better understand the importance of anti-hate and anti-bias policies;
- learn more about key elements that should be included in each district’s policy;
- receive supports and resources to assist school communities in preventing and addressing issues of hate and bias.
The Anti-Defamation League will be the guest presenter during the first hour to set the context and share resources. The second hour will focus on essential policy elements and provide some sample language districts can use as they review their current policies.

English Learner Roadmap Professional Development for Parents and Teachers
|
|
|
Parent Workshop 101. Families play a crucial role in the success of their children’s academics. Ensuring they are informed about the English Learner Roadmap will serve as an important bridge to foster stronger school relationships, personal investment, and robust implementation of the English Learner Roadmap. All print and media resources will be provided, in English and Spanish, so District and School Site personnel are able to empower families to support schools in centralizing the needs of English learners. Teacher as Language Coach. How can teachers easily and effectively build language
proficiency for their EL/DLL students throughout their daily lessons? This two-hour interactive webinar, including one hour of pre-session asynchronous work, provides teachers with a set of practices that can be quickly integrated into existing lessons and practices, including Designated ELD. Aligned to Principle 2 of the EL Roadmap, participants will learn to effectively identify and address the strengths and needs of English learners by providing targeted scaffolds and supports to actively deepen students’ use of sophisticated academic language for speaking and writing.
