TIME FOR YOUR DUSTBATH, JUNIOR... WATCH ME CLOSELY!
Albert and Victoria, a pair of Red-billed Hornbills (Tockus rufirostrus) resident at Rhino Safari Camp on the shores of the Matusadona National Park, Lake Kariba, have successfully raised 3 youngsters this season. They proudly introduced their offspring, fresh out of the nest, in early April to the delight of the camp staff and guests. The fledglings are still being fed by Mum and Dad, and their flight was... ....well....certainly not quite under control. Some of their delightful antics were captured on video (check out the Camp's Facebook page).
Clearly there's a lot of new Hornbill stuff to be learned.
Like how to take a dustbath.... I mean, why would you DO that? Well, apparently dust or sand bathing, helps birds to maintain their plumage in good condition. The dust absorbs excess oil on the feathers and prevents the feathers from becoming greasy. It may also help to remove dry skin and feather parasites. Birds that live in arid regions (like the Zambezi Valley) are commonly seen dust bathing, and, at least 33 Southern African bird species have been recorded doing this.
