6 signs you have a sewer line problem
How do you know if you have a sewer line problem?
Being pro-active with your sewer line is always best, but we realize that people get busy and forget to keep up with regular maintenance. In fact, we hear from homeowners that are in the process of selling their home when the sewer scope inspection reveals issue that they did not know they had. Sewer Lines Only recommends having your line cleaned and inspected every 1-3 years to remove any build-up or debris that could be blocking your line.

Going too long without sewer line cleaning or repair can make all of these problems infinitely worse. There are, however, a few easily observable signs that may indicate that your sewer pipes need fixing:

1. Strange, gurgling sounds coming from your toilet, sink, or tub drains.
If your toilet is making an unusual noise after flushing, it could be a sign of a broken sewer line. A gurgling generally happens when air is being trapped and then released abruptly. There is definitely a leakage that’s allowing air into your sewer line.

2. Extremely slow draining in your bathtub (or total failure to drain).
Finding an isolated clog in your house might not be serious. But if all the drains seem to be clogged, and you are having a difficult time clearing them it might be a sign of a broken sewer line. The problem is most likely in your main sewer line as all drains rely on the main sewer line for drainage.

A slow, clogged drain means that there is a blockage. Before it leads to a sewage backup, it’s best to call a professional to assess the situation.

Keep a check on your toilet, bathtub, or sink drainage. DO NOT use chemical drain cleaners to solve a slow drain or blockage. The harsh chemicals in a blocked pipe may eat away at the cast iron or PVC.

3. Obvious sewage backup in your toilet, tub, or sinks.
Experiencing such backups or blockages often every time you flush or run water down your sink or bathtub? Something is wrong. If these backups are limited to only one drain, then you can concentrate all your energies on getting that isolated drain fixed. Otherwise, your main sewer line can become clogged or broken — by perhaps a tree root intrusion, channeling, cracks letting surrounding soil in, or a misaligned pipe connection.

4. A strong sewer odor in your basement, backyard, or other areas in the house.
A strong, unusual odor is generally the first sign of a broken sewer pipe. If you can smell sewer gas in your home, chances are that you either have a dried out drain in your basement floor or a broken line. It’s important to take them both seriously.
Since a sanitary sewer is ideally airtight with the exception of vent stacks on the roof — that allows for the sewage to move downhill — you need to investigate any smells emanating. Surely, there is a crack somewhere in your sewer system.
The basement is the most common area of the home for sewer odor. But, if this smell is coming somewhere in your yard, check for any broken lines in the property outside your home.

5. Greener patches of grass around sewage pipes compared to other areas of your lawn
A broken sewage line beneath the surface of your lawn could cause your grass to grow a little greener in particular areas. It’s due to the fact that fecal matter is a natural fertilizer with nutrients, and when mixed with soil may encourage your grass to grow lush. However, since sewage also contains bacteria and contaminants, it might eventually lead to a lot of damage to your landscaping.

6. Drenched or flooded areas of your lawn
Sewage pooling in your lawn is a sure-shot sign of a problem and should be addressed immediately. Most often, the problem area is located directly under the pool of sewer water.

It’s imperative that you keep a vigilant eye on the above signs that tell you that you have a broken sewer pipe and get timely repair or replacement done. You will also save money and hopefully avoid any costly damage to your home.

ANOTHER 5 STAR REVIEW!

Tyler came out and cleared out the mainline today. We had two other companies come out and recommend a mainline replacement or couldn’t come up with a solution. In a panic I reached out to Sewer Lines Only. But because it was after 6 on a Friday, they were closed. I filled out the online form just in case. Within 30 minutes, I got a call from the owner. Because they were booked, she gave me another company as an option to work with to repair the entire line. She also offered their own drain cleaning services as an option. I am so glad I accepted. She got me on the schedule via a text, well after hours on a Friday night. My tech Tyler arrived 5 minutes early and got right to work. He worked really hard at trying to clear the blockage. After some time, he was excited to announce that he cleared it. In fact, on one attempt while pulling the flex line out of the pipe, he noticed it had been damaged. He offered to run to the shop and get a second unit to make sure the job was finished. Before end of day, I had a cleared line, my yard was cleaned up and the invoice and video were in my inbox. I was really impressed with the customer service from top to bottom. I have a new service team to add to my home services list. Thank you so much to everyone that helped out today! I will most definitely call again in the future! ~Ryan B. Denver, CO
