Bike Month Kick-Off!

CAPITAL TO COAST WITH THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE OF HIGHWAY SAFETY

GOHS will be debuting the “Capital to Coast 2021” tour on May 3-7, 2021, which is a 5-city educational tour, with stops in Atlanta, Athens, Macon, Savannah, and Brunswick. To help decrease fatality numbers, the tour will focus on issues like helmet safety, the “3 Feet Law,” tips for both motorists and cyclists on sharing the road, and other bicycle safety issues. We hope you'll help us kick off Bike Walk Month and join BikeAthens, Georgia Bikes! and GOHS for a bike helmet giveaway Tuesday morning, followed by a brief bike ride around Athens.

MAY 4th | 10:30 AM TO 1:00 PM

Location: The FREE event will begin and end at BikeAthens. 1075 W. Broad St.

Your Support is Needed!

Help SORBA reach their goal to receive a matching grant from the Outride Fund so that they can provide a complete bike park at Walker Park. The Outride program provides evidence-based cycling programs to improve social, emotional, and cognitive health all across the United States. Having a complete bike park in Athens allows for a more diverse cycling community that is friendly to all ages and skill levels.

Safe Cycling Education Outreach

On Monday Scott (Executive Director) and Irene (Vice President of the Board) presented a safe cycling course to a local group of Cub Scouts. In this course the children learned the correct procedures for stopping/starting, signaling, and obstacle avoidance. Helmet fits were performed for each child prior to starting and at the end they received educational handouts for safe riding habits.

Traffic Skills 101

We recently hosted Traffic Skills 101 (TS101). This class is a fast-paced course that gives you the confidence to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail. You learn how to conduct bicycle safety checks, fix flats, on-bike skills, and crash avoidance techniques. We recommend this class for adults and children above age thirteen.

IMPORTANT: This course is a pre-requisite for all League Cycling Instructor (LCI) candidates who are planning to get certified during a 20 hour LCI training seminar.

What We Are Reading

While it is universally agreed that helmets keep our heads safer while we bike, are laws that require them actually doing any good? In "How US helmet laws are used against cyclists of colour and homeless people" a writer from The Guardian outlines how helmet laws unfairly impact people of color and homeless individuals.
