COMPETITIONS GALORE

Walgett Shire Council is holding a design competition in search of a new logo.
Walgett Shire Council General Manager Michael Urquhart has opted to open up the design process to the local community rather than going directly to a professional designer, believing it will create a sense of ownership in the brand.
‘’Our community know us, our Shire and our people so who better to ask to come up with ideas for our new look and feel,’’ he said.
The new logo will replace the out dated green and gold symbol that has been used for decades with a professional logo that reflects the Community of Walgett Shire as a whole with a simple, modern and relevant theme that can be readily recognized as Walgett Shire Council.
The logo will be used across a range of applications from letterhead and brochures to websites and social media, welcome signs, street flags and vehicle signage.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for a local person interested in, or a student studying graphic design or photography or someone who just feels strongly about creating something special for their local community.

The Sims Metal WASTE TO ART & design 2021
EXHIBITION AND COMPETITION
The Year of Aluminium and Steel Cans

WASTE TO ART is a community art exhibition and competition open to all local residents who reside in the NetWaste region. It showcases creative works made from reused & recyclable waste materials. The aim is to challenge peoples’ perceptions about ‘rubbish’ and to celebrate the reuse and recycling of waste through arts and crafts.

Waste to Art provides an innovative approach to waste education, invites individuals, schools and community groups to take up the challenge and create a new life for materials that would otherwise have been thrown away, considered useless: bottle tops, plastic bags, parts from rusty farm machinery, old horse shoes, buttons, and the list goes on. Instead of ending up in landfill these waste materials can be turned into fantastic works of art.

The Competition will include categories to challenge and stimulate the imagination.

This competition gives aspiring and professional artists the chance to explore and share their “waste reduction message”. It also provides a wonderful opportunity for the entire Walgett Shire Council community to showcase their creativity.

A specific waste item is featured as part of Waste to Art each round in an attempt to highlight problem issues, and this year is the Year of Aluminium and Steel Cans.

Council News

COUNCIL WELCOMES NEW STAFF TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT
Walgett Shire Council has welcomed three new staff members to the Environmental Services Department; Kimley Talbert, Caitlin Mahony and Joshua Ruttley.
Kimley has commenced in the role of Senior Health and Building Surveyor, Caitlin has taken up the position of Town Planner and Joshua has filled Council’s new role of Landfill Attendant.
Kimley has a distinguished and extensive career in Local Government spanning 50 years and has demonstrated his commitment being to community-focused and customer-driven.
“I feel extremely privileged to be working for Council and the Walgett Shire Community and I thank Council for its confidence in appointing me, said Ms Mahony.
Joshua has expressed his excitement to be working with colleagues and the community to ensure that we are as efficient and effective as we can be, in particular with the management of the landfills. On a personal note, Joshua said “I am thrilled to working for my local Council and contributing to my home town”.
Council’s General Manager Michael Urquhart congratulated the trio on their respective appointments. “I believe the knowledge, experience and enthusiasm of our new staff members will be a real asset to our team here at Council,” Mr Urquhart said.
I would ask the residents of the Walgett Shire to welcome and embrace our new team members and the changes that will flow from their contributions and leadership.
MAYOR’S THANK-YOU MESSAGE TO EMERGENCY SERVICES STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS
The Mayor Ian Woodcock OAM said “he would like to sincerely thank all the emergency services staff and volunteers that have taken time to support and assist the Walgett Shire communities during the recent flood event”.
The SES have responded to residents calls for assistance in and around Rowena where properties became isolated.
“The initial phase of any flood plan is preparedness and the SES volunteers in particular have put in a mammoth effort monitoring weather forecasts, river systems, roads and preparing sand bags in readiness of flood water inundation of properties”, said the Mayor.
On a brighter note, the Mayor said “local business houses have certainly benefitted in the past two (2) weeks from having such a large contingent of emergency services personnel stay in the Walgett and Collarenebri communities”.
The Mayor also said “while the flood waters are receding, I strongly urge motorists not travel on flooded roads, it’s not worth the risk, as roads may have sustained damage from flooding”.
THE ROAD TO RECOVERY
With the main flood peak having passed through the Collarenebri and Walgett, Council’s General Manager Mike Urquhart is still urging motorists to drive to the conditions and obey road signs as both sealed and unsealed roads have sustained serious widespread flood damage during the recent flood event, and are in need of extensive repair.
Mr. Urquhart said “Council staff had been working tirelessly over the past fortnight assessing roads for damage and undertaking emergency repairs on many of the shire roads and highways to keep them open and in a trafficable state. Unfortunately, we just don’t have the resources to inspect every last metre of road, so I would ask property owners and motorists if they can assist with this process by reporting damage to Council, either by phoning or lodging a customer action request on the Council webpage. To date the responses has been terrific with motorists and many landowners sending in information of road damage locations, and in many instances they have included photos of the road damage”.
Council will lodge a claim with Transport NSW to access funding for the road repairs who in-turn will visit the Shire to inspect the road network in accordance with Council’s flood damage claim. In the mean-time road repairs will be undertaken to restore access for property owners, while the more extensive road repairs of gravel re-sheeting, heavy patching and resealing are done as part of the continuing works program.
A NEW PLAYSPACE FOR LIGHTNING RIDGE ENSURING EVERYONE CAN PLAY
Walgett Shire Council was successful in the 2020-21 Everyone Can Play Grant, Bushfire and Drought Recovery demonstration project category, and received a grant of $511,000. The funding will deliver a new playspace on Pandora Street in Lightning Ridge.  The NSW Government’s Everyone Can Play program supports councils to create new playspaces across the state to ensure people of all ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds can play.
The demonstration project will be a collaboration among Council, The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment and the community. The play space will demonstrate an inclusive response that supports community recovery and resilience, and will show how the project can bring a community together and to provide a new space for all to enjoy.
General Manager Mike Urquhart said, “Inclusive playgrounds provide wonderful spaces for families and friends of all ages and abilities to play, relax and connect, and this funding will help make our community even more inclusive, and the playground will add another element to the existing recreation precinct.”
An all-inclusive play environment is designed to develop the physical, cognitive, sensory and social skills in children of all abilities. The new playspace will provide a range of play and recreation activities that ensures there is truly something for everyone.
“This project will show how a collaborative approach between council, community and the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment can deliver a truly inclusive space for the community and visitors alike,” the General Manager said.

The Lightning Ride Bush Safari needs your help!
LIGHTNING RIDGE BUSH SAFARI
So many stories, so many kilometres, so much money raised for our community!
Run in spring or winter school holidays the Bush Safari is a tag along 4WD, camping tour of rural and outback destinations.
Supported traditionally with Police, Ambulance, SES and mechanic presence.
Great fun for families and also those who want the adventure but appreciate the support and company of a group.
In its heyday there were two Safari’s running every year! Over the years big profits have been made and that money has all been generated back into this self sufficient and independent community with a special focus on the needs of children and young people.
Committee’s have come and gone, some have grown the safari and others have depleted it but all have done their best given circumstances and volunteer capacity.
The organisation is currently financially very secure, with funds set aside for donation, however the committee is in care taker mode. All care taker office holders have previously held long standing positions and have, in the past, been very active in the organisation. All are now either past their prime camping years or have other life commitments!
We all believe in the ongoing fund raising and fun potential of the Lightning Ridge Bush Safari and are very willing to mentor new committee members.
If all of the above sparks your interest either in fund raising, community involvement or camping/4WD adventure you would be most welcome to attend our next meeting:
Wednesday 21st April 2021 at 7pm
