Poulsbo Sons of Norway 2-44 - President's Message
Happy Syttende Mai one and all!!
We have so many things to celebrate in May.  First, we have May Day and, if you live in Hawaii, you will also be celebrating Lei Day.  Remember when you were young and made cones to put flowers in to give to your favorite people?  The next day, we celebrate that 55-year-old tradition of International Day of Idleness—where the less you do, the more you are celebrating!  Some really know how to celebrate that.  I imagine you’ve all heard by now that Viking Fest has once again been cancelled.  But here at the lodge, we will still be celebrating.  Once we celebrate Mother’s Day on the 9th, we’ll be ready to start making preparations for our very special Syttende Mai Celebration on Saturday, May 15th.  We will begin with a yummy meatball dinner on Friday night and then will have a Vendor Fair in the Marine Room, a Beer Garden in the lower parking area and a Taste of Norway booth close to the Beer Garden on the 15th.
A challenge for our members.  Here’s a chance for you to volunteer.  There will be days of making food for the Taste of Poulsbo—rolls, meatballs, krumkake, lefse, kransekaker, etc.  We will need docents to help maintain social distancing and other covid requirements for the Vendor Fair and we will need volunteers for the Beer Garden and Taste of Norway.  To volunteer, call the office, look on our social media,  use the sign up link mentioned below, or talk to one of the leads.  Vendor Fair—Karen Zabinski, Beer Garden—Koleen Baker, and Taste of Norway—Ingunn Kuester and Lizbeth Doving.
For those of you who are new or who didn’t receive last year’s May newsletter, I thought I’d revisit the short history I wrote on the celebrating of Syttende Mai in Poulsbo.  Here it is—a little history of Poulsbo:
Viking Fest and Syttende Mai have not always been the same celebration.  The first Syttende Mai was held in Poulsbo in 1903 and people were invited from as far away as Seattle and Ballard.  The response was incredible and, with fifteen steamboat trips dropping off passengers, plus people coming in rowboats, sailboats, launches, horse and wagons, and even walking, it was estimated that 8,000 attended that celebration in front of the Martha & Mary Children’s Home.  (Let me tell you right now that I wasn’t there, I read about it much later in the paper.)  Honoring the Norway Constitution Day in Poulsbo the next few years was hit or miss until 1916 when the Poulsbo Sons of Norway lodge was organized and the Syttende Mai celebration found a permanent home!  From a different start, the NK Arts & Crafts Fair began in May of 1960 and, as that grew, an enterprising group of residents decided to consolidate the two celebrations and make a festival.  When the first 3-day Viking Fest was held the closest weekend to May 17th in 1969, a new tradition was born in Poulsbo.  That’s your history lesson for today.  A question from this may turn up one Trivia Night!
As I have been saying for over a year now, soon it will be a New Dawn, a New Day!  It’s starting.

Proposed By Law Change
The following By-Law change will be voted on at the May Lodge meeting.  It would allow for electronic distribution to members - to allow for better communication. We believe it is supported by International C&C, as they have also made similar changes in the last two years.
Current:
ARTICLE VIII
CHANGES AND APPROVAL OF BY_LAWS
  1.         These By-Laws may be repealed and/or amended by a two-thirds majority vote of the members present and voting at a regular or special lodge meeting, provided that such By-laws changes were presented in writing to and read at the prior meeting of the lodge and membership of the lodge have been made aware , through the usual publication of the lodge, that this vote is to be taken.

An alternative provision to By-laws changes would be to present the changes in writing at the prior meeting of the lodge, electronically transmit the changes to all known member’s  e-mail addresses, and through the usual publication of the lodge, without a reading at the lodge meeting.  In either case, a summary of the changes must accompany the proposed changes.
