CLE suspension deadline Thursday

Pursuant to Rule 419, SCACR, if Bar members have not established CLE compliance by April 15, 2021, their names will be forwarded to the South Carolina Supreme Court for suspension of their law licenses. To establish compliance, lawyers must earn sufficient accredited CLE hours (or have carry-forward hours from the previous reporting year), file their reports listing the required credits, and pay all fees. To avoid suspension, compliance reports and fees must be received by the Commission no later than Thursday, April 15, 2021. Questions should be directed to the Commission at (803) 799-5578 or e-mailed to commcle@bellsouth.net

Submit wellness photos

The Wellness Committee is in the process of revamping and updating the wellness website Living Above the Bar, and it needs your help!  We would like to include more pictures from Bar members in action across all sections of the site instead of relying on stock images.  Please submit photos or videos displaying you taking part in any form of wellness (physical, mental, social) activity or practice to Jasmine Smith at  jsmith@robinsongray.com. Photos that you have already posted on other social media sites will work. The Wellness Committee will award a prize to those photos selected.

Books for SC children in need

The Young Lawyers Division and The Links, Incorporated, kicked off a book drive for children in need this month. Drop off your new or gently used books for elementary school aged children through May 17. Drop off in the lobby of the SC Bar Building at 950 Taylor St., Columbia. Email Kimberly Snipes with questions.

Tech tip Tuesday: Eye on security

Check out  this tech tip brought to you by the SC Bar's Practice Management Assistance Program (PMAP). Do you have antivirus/malware software on your PC/Mac/Server? If so, pay close attention to that software's renewal terms. Watch out for any future phishing emails that contain an attached invoice. The  scam  asks you to either click a link to renew your subscription or call the phone number listed on the fake invoice to cancel. Visit www.scbar.org/tech for helpful links or email  pmap@scbar.org  for more advice.

Crafting for a good cause

The Young Lawyers Division’s Make-A-Wish Committee is hosting a Virtual DIY Night facilitated by the AR Workshop from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 28. A boutique DIY studio that offers hands-on classes for creating custom and charming home decor from raw materials, AR Workshop is willing to host a virtual night where Bar members can build a project together virtually and a percentage of the proceeds of each project will be donated to Make-A-Wish. This is a statewide event as they have workshops in Greenville, Columbia, and Charleston. The projects range from $45 to (over) $100 and you are free to purchase the one you prefer.

Register via this link, and after you have signed up, you will receive an email with a link to purchase your DIY to-go kit and the Zoom link prior to the Virtual DIY Night. Simply follow the emailed link for your location of choice to place your order, select your project, pick up your to-go kit, and join the YLD for some creative fun for a good cause. If you have questions, email Mary Catherine Harbin.

ISO volunteers to network with students

The SC Bar Diversity Committee’s Pipeline Sub-Committee will implement the virtual program “LawBound” at Columbia High School on April 23. LawBound is a program created to diversify the legal pipeline.

During the program students will have an opportunity to virtually network with lawyers. If you are interested in participating in the virtual networking component of the program, there are a few additional slots available that will help the committee meet its goal of a 1:1 attorney/student ratio.

Contact Deyaska Spencer at
spencer@deyaskalaw.com or Janice Holmes at janice.homes@clydeco.us for additional information and to sign up.
