I am deliberate and afraid of nothing. -Audre Lorde
“Pivoting is not the end of the disruption process, but the beginning of the next leg of your journey.” Jay Samit
Give light and people will find the way. - Ella Black
I intentionally took two weeks off - and sent out no newsletters. It's my new way of working - and pivoting to it has been a process. Twice a month now, I have carved out 3 days to be at home: three sort of - off days. It has been the best strategy to begin the second quarter of this year, and it is a way to begin the reopening of the gallery and exhibition season, one that I will be more rested and centered.
I gave an idea to a friend about a project for him to do with the UN and next thing I know - he called me back a few weeks later to ask me to consider working on a putting proposal with him for a project with UNICEF. It made me realize more and more - the importance of the power of giving. I give things away - lots of free advice - with no expectations. So many times, I end up getting back other gifts.
I am and have been fascinated by data so every so often, I check the status of covid-19 and vaccinations in NY - and it's accessible on the web: https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/covid/covid-19-data-vaccines.page. Oh, how technology has made it so easy to see what's going on. So as we re-open, we have put into place some basic rules: Everyone who comes in must have a MASK, Sign in and Sanitize; and we are limiting our capacity to 10 people. We have also created a sign-up attendance page on Eventbrite for our first opening weekend - please sign up and to our OPEN HOUSE.

CALABAR GALLERY REOPENS WITH AFRICAN ARTISTS AND PROCESSES, FEATURING THE WORK OF ALEXANDRE KYUNGU MWILAMBWE AND P. WAMAITHA NG'ANG'A.
We are delighted to open our first exhibition with cautious optimism. We have created an Eventbrite to help us to cautiously monitor attendance and maintain Covid-19 protocols. Rather than permit 16 people, we have reduced the number inside the gallery to about 8-10 at a time.

With a degree in business and less than a decade in the film and cinema industry, Emelyn Stuart has exemplified leadership and provided inspiration to filmmakers globally. She is the CEO and President of Stuart Films LLC, a proven force in the independent filmmaking community.
Stuart’s first project “Wings and Beer” (2009) started as a script and a dream from a friend, and then morphed into an award-winning short film—a testament to the difference realized with a producer that brings partnership, rigor and powerful execution. A range of projects including a successful off-Broadway play garnered her recognition internationally. Her wildly successful web series, “12 Steps to Recovery,” earned Emelyn the Best Producer award at the 2011 LAWebfest. Stuart is partly responsible for multiple award-winning feature films including The Turnaround and Title VII. Her feature film Life Is Too Short premiered to sold out audiences in New York for its 2015 screening debut and in 2017 it was awarded Best Feature Film domestically and internationally.
A keen talent, Stuart possesses and was a catalyst for her creating the coveted New York based Ocktober Film Festival founded in 2012. The Ocktober Film Festival is a “teaching festival.” In 2018, Stuart opened an independent movie theater in New York. Stuart Cinema & Café became a beloved community movie theater. The theater offers a distribution alternative for independent filmmakers and is a resource hub.
Join us for our next art auction, it will open next Monday, April 19th at 9am.
