Rehabilitation Research News: April 16, 2021

From the Director's Desk

Good morning! I look forward to seeing you on May 3 at 10 a.m. ET for the National Advisory Board on Medical Rehabilitation Research meeting. There are a lot of announcements below, but I would draw your attention to a few items:

  • Please save the date—Friday, May 21, from 12 to 1 p.m. ET. NCMRR is hosting our first speaker series, featuring grantees James Finley, Ph.D., and Ela Plow, Ph.D., PT. More details to come.

  • The MR3 (Medical Rehabilitation Research Resource) Network’s first annual scientific retreat, on precision rehabilitation, will be held June 29–30. Learn more about the retreat and register today External Web Site Policy.

  • Bridge2AI, a new Common Fund program on artificial intelligence (AI), is being launched to collect new, AI-ready data to address grand challenges in health. One grand challenge is movement phenotyping. I encourage those of you working in the fields of motion analysis and wearable technology to read the notices of intent: RM-21-021 and RM-21-022.

  • There is also a Notice of Special Interest on developing and testing interventions for health-enhancing physical activity.

  • Finally, there are two calls for administrative supplements to make existing repositories align with FAIR (findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability) and TRUST (transparency, responsibility, user community, sustainability, and technology) principles and to make analysis software open source and available. Please see the notices below and contact your program officer if interested in applying.

National Institute of Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research

The National Institute of Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) has published its funding opportunities for this fiscal year to Grants.gov. All open opportunities are listed below.

CDC: New Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) Data Available on Request

CDC is pleased to announce that 2019 site-level data from PRAMS are now available through the proposal submission process. PRAMS provides data on maternal attitudes, experiences, and behaviors around the time of pregnancy. PRAMS is currently funded at 50 sites (47 states; New York City; Washington, DC; and Puerto Rico) and covers about 83% of all live births in the United States.

For selected sites that added supplemental questions in 2019, the updated data include new indicators of opioid use during pregnancy and of maternal disabilities.

We hope the release of the 2019 data strengthens the capacity of public health stakeholders and partners to identify and address maternal and infant health risks, monitor changes in behaviors, assess public health programs and prevention strategies, and address emerging health issues of concern to pregnant women. Information on how to request data for analysis can be found here.

C-STAR

The mission of the Center for Smart Use of Technologies to Assess Real-World Outcomes (C-STAR) is to leverage the collective experience of clinicians, scientists, engineers, and patients to support the development of novel pilot studies that explore the smart use of technology to assess motor and cognitive performance in laboratory, clinical, or community settings. C-STAR is looking for projects with the potential for significant clinical impact that will likely lead to successful grant applications to NIH and other national funding agencies.

C-STAR will fund four projects per year. Each project may receive up to $25,000 in direct costs that must be expended within 12 months of the study start date. Awardees will also receive mentorship from top leaders in engineering, clinical, outcomes, and implementation science research.

If you're interested, please visit the C-STAR website External Web Site Policy for details and submit your letter of intent by May 17, 2021.
