AFS Awarded The Stevens Initiative Grant for Virtual Exchange Research
The Stevens Initiative

AFS has received a research grant to participate in The Stevens Initiative’s “Strengthening the Field: Catalyzing Research in Virtual Exchange.” AFS will look into the efficacy of virtual exchange in strengthening global competence by analyzing the AFS Global You Adventurer program for high school students. The study will be conducted from April to October 2021, and will include 150 participants. The Youth Assembly
Friendship Ambassadors Foundation (FAF) and its flagship program, The Youth Assembly, will become a part of AFS Intercultural Programs. The two organizations will combine their decades of experience in the world of international education and cultural exchange, and their shared focus on developing the next generation of young leaders. The next Youth Assembly will take place in 2022.

AFS Global You—short-term, flexible, online certificate programs—provide opportunities for young people to enhance their global competence and communication skills, connect with global peers, and explore diverse cultures. A key feature that makes AFS online programs special is that they are truly global, with scholarships and different language options available to ensure the inclusion of different perspectives. Frontiers Journal
Assessing intercultural competence in an academically acceptable way may become a powerful tool to legitimize educational exchanges and to give them a positive role in the school curricula of the future. In his latest article published by the Frontiers: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Study Abroad, Mattia Baiutti, Ph.D., a researcher with Fondazione Intercultura in Italy, explores this topic. Find out more.
ENZ
Education New Zealand (ENZ) continues to partner with AFS on delivering the Global Competence Certificate to a variety of audiences. ENZ is on track to reach 600 professionals, university faculty, and students from different age groups with this blended learning program, using it to "global up" their skills and enabling them to establish valuable international connections, despite the current travel restrictions. Mary Porterfield, AFS-USA

Congrats to Mary Porterfield, a longtime AFS-USA Volunteer from Kansas, for receiving the Paul Simon Award for the Promotion of Language and International Studies for her demonstrated leadership in the promotion of language learning and international understanding, ultimately contributing to the world peace. Find out more.

 

AFS Portugal's Rita Saias Santos

AFS Portugal's Rita Saias Santos has been appointed as a consultant for the youth issues at the Civil House of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic until 2026. Rita has served as the Board Chair of AFS Portugal and led the organization's Presidency of the National Youth Council. She continues to be an advocate for AFS values, giving young people a voice and defending youth participation and leadership in all institutions.
