Stay Safe Together

Two sisters enjoy discovering the Skiano on the trails.
The Skiano made the local news in 2020-21 and as far away as Germany!

From the President

Thank you for an incredible ski season. The board is so appreciate all the work our staff, our coaches, and our incredible volunteers are doing to offer our members the best experience we can.  Especially wanted to recognize the work and support that went into helping us keep Otway a safe place to train and recreate in the past year.  There was so much work put into complying with Public Health Orders so that we could safely stay open during this pandemic, please accept our sincere gratitude to all who were involved.

As we reflect on the past ski season, we are very proud of the club’s growth and were so excited with the opportunity to welcome so many new members. We are hoping you all loved Otway as much as we do and that everyone ‘tells a friend’, we would love to see next season!

Finally, thank you to everyone who attended our two Zoom calls last week where we presented a Trails Update to members.  We hope you found the meetings informative as we had worked to share all the work done over the last year on trail development.  We appreciated all the questions and will be posting presentation and Q&A material to our website very soon.

We also wanted to take the opportunity to introduce two new board members, they bring a wealth of experience and expertise to our board, please join us in welcoming Heather and Phil!

Heather Sanford has been a CNSC Member for many years and is a frequent, year-round, enthusiastic trail user. She is a non-practicing lawyer (Member of the Nova Scotia Bar) and active community volunteer with extensive governance and Board experience. Heather and her family have lived in Prince George since 2010. In addition to many parent volunteer hours supporting St. Mary’s Elementary, the Agri-plex and RCAC 396 Prince George, she has volunteered with Canada Games, the World ParaNordic Ski Championships, World Women’s Curling Championships, the Prince George Winter City Committee, and she has recently joined the Board at the Exploration Place.

Phil Mullins and his family have been members of CNSC since 2009, when they moved to Prince George. Phil and his wife Tara Klassen along with their dog Baxter (Klassen) are recreational skiers and mountain bikers, their kids have participated in the SDP and the summer mountain bike camps for years. In the past, Phil has taught and coached cross country skiing, sailing, canoeing, as well as downhill and Telemark skiing; he’s also facilitated wilderness and international field education programs. He did his Masters and PhD in Recreation and Leisure Studies at the University of Alberta, and is an Associate Professor at UNBC where he teaches and researches outdoor education, outdoor recreation and nature-based tourism management. As Trails Director he hopes to learn and seek advice from a representative Trails Committee dedicated to facilitating members’ multiple and year-round uses of the CNSC tenure, while upholding the club’s diverse management responsibilities. Phil has a keen personal and professional interest in combining trail development and conservation while delivering diverse recreation experiences, and hopes his expertise can be of service to the club.

Happy Spring Everyone!

Lance MacDonald, President

It's a Wrap
Thank you for the amazing ski season!

Who knew we would still be navigating restrictions during the 2020-21 ski season? We did not, but we planned for it and that foresight made for a fun season. Strong safety plans and a strong desire to provide our community with a place to break the isolation kept Caledonia Nordic Ski Club open. "Stay Safe Together" became our guiding statement this season and we built upon it.

I want to thank the members, volunteers, and staff who made it all possible. This week we slowed down enough to enjoy the spring sun and wish Nicole all the best on her next adventure. Nicole Perrin poured her passion into programs over the last 3 seasons. Simon Lamarche picks up the torch. In this newsletter we highlight the great year we had. We grew, we tried new things and we learned. Thank you for taking the journey with us.

Thank you,
Angela LeFebvre, General Manager

Race Programs

The end of the season is upon us! Each year it seems that it creeps up  fast and we are sad to see the snow go but gearing up for summer training! This year was a different year but our athletes sure got in a lot of skiing, they recorded over 34000KM for the season! Go team! One of our athletes got in 73 days of skiing and 1627km just on her own! We didn’t let the season go out without a bang….three senior athletes Martin Williamson, Tyson Green, Josh Fiala skied for 24 hours to raise money for the school programs and they have raised $8,280!!! The donation link is on the website if you would like to donate. This was a terrific undertaking and they each skied over 200km (that’s like skiing to Williams lake!). A big shout out to their support crew (parents, siblings, and coach Nicole) for the change of clothes, 24 hour boot drying, delicious and nutritious snacks, foot rubs, ridiculous costumes, motivational talks  and….fireworks! Of course we can’t forgot those who came and skied with them Leland, Simon skied 7 hours with them, Coach Graeme up at the wee hours of the night for a few hours of skiing and some more along the way! Wow what a memorable event that was.

Race Programs will be wrapping up with a final formal attire zoom session to have one last chance to share our successes of the season with each other and bid their final farewells to coach Nicole. Coach Nicole is moving on from Caledonia but we hope to see her at races and camps next season.

Keep an eye on the website for your chance to order bright athletic shirts (order deadline April 11th at midnight), this is a fundraiser for the race programs, part of the proceeds from the shirts will go towards the race team for team supplies.

Its been a crazy year, but a good one! Many new challenges were faced and conquered, friendships were made and skiing….well there was lots of that! Thank-you to everyone for all your continued support of the programs, we look forward to seeing you on the dirt trails soon enough! Remember to give a wide berth when you see us roller skiing!

A Good-Bye From Nicole

A big thank-you to everyone for welcoming me into the CNCS family for the past three seasons. Moving to Prince George was the big city for me and I was nervous! But you have all been so welcoming and supportive, I appreciate my CNSC family and I hope I will get to come visit during the race season! Thank-you for three years of memories, good times, lots of skiing, and all sorts of other adventures. I will be making my way back to Kimberley so be sure to come visit! Just follow the trail of glitter and costumes and you will be sure to find me….

Coach Nicole

Welcome Simon

Hello Caledonia Nordic Community,

I am thrilled to introduce myself as the Caledonia Nordic cross country ski team's soon-to-be head coach. It will be a challenge to fill Nicole’s ski boots, but I am up for the job!

I am an enthusiastic and avid skier that grew up on the trails of Gatineau Park. I skied competitively until beginning a kinesiology degree with the plan to pursue a career in coaching. I coached competitive skiing throughout my degree but focused on strength and conditioning and health care kinesiology after moving to Victoria. I spent a couple of years as the city’s lone roller skier until visiting Prince George as a ski guide for the 2019 World Para Nordic Championships and experiencing the trails and community. My partner and I chose to move to Prince George shortly after, and I have been on the Caledonia trails as much as possible ever since. I am excited to return to my love of coaching with this position and hope to continue the work that Nicole has done to foster a healthy and supportive ski community.

I hope to see you on the trails,

Simon Lamarche, Cross Country Head Coach
HBSc H.K, CSCS, Practising kinesiologist (BCAK), Rehabilitation assistant.

Skills Development Program

Our SDP program has officially ended for this winter season. We held a Fun Day with an Easter themed treasure hunt out on the trails to wrap up the program. The Easter bunny even paid an early visit to help out and meet the kids.  Despite Covid 19 and some intense weather, we successfully made it to the end. Everyone involved has shown immense enthusiasm and support in keeping the program running.  We are always seeking new coaches for upcoming seasons to open more spots for participants, so if you are interested please contact me at programadmin@caledonianordic.com for coaching course details.  Thank you to coaches, parents, helpers as well as ski patrol who kept everything going safely and smoothly.

Biathlon Program

I have really enjoyed my first season as head biathlon coach with the club, and it came with many firsts!

With the challenges of COVID we had to reorganize our range many times: designating lanes to each athlete and running separate sessions for the Bears and Junior/Senior programs.

The biathlon event organizing committee did a great job (thank you!) of putting on three race simulations for our athletes. They ran simulated relay, sprint and individual competitions each with the necessary COVID related modifications. The athletes showed progress, resilience and respect for each other through these more complicated experiences. An additional big thank you to Sarah Beaudry for donating 4 bibs from her world cup circuit this year and congratulations to the random draw winners.

Our team was also kept busy with both national and regional virtual challenges (shooting, ski – technique, time-trials.) The results of which were sent to both Biathlon Canada and Biathlon BC to help calculate eligibility for squads for the coming seasons.

In addition, the athletes willingly participated in the CNSC race team challenge. This experience had many memorable moments, demonstrating lots of grit and determination! The coaches were continually impressed at the sheer amount of effort the mixed cross-country and biathlon teams put into the challenge. As a collective group, the athletes skied over 34,000km this winter, WOW!

The growth in our athletes this season has been huge. Our ski volumes have been incredible, and we’ve learned numerous new skills. This growth was supported by fabulous team spirit, despite the challenges being thrown at them.

A big THANK YOU to all the parents, athletes and coaches for helping to make this season a success. The Coaching team look forward to working with you all again in the spring, when some of our programs resume.
Stay safe, and see you on the trails!

Ali Cadel, Biathlon Head Coach

New grooming and trail condition system!

The grooming team is excited to announce that as of the start of the 2021/2022 season, we will be introducing a new grooming report software that will give or members and guests an even better experience.

Through the last few months of this season, we’ve been testing Nordic Pulse, a piece of software developed right here in Western Canada, by skier and software developer Julien Locke.

This new system will show improvements in stability and user friendliness over our current system. It will include an app that skiers can access on their Android or iOS smartphones. For skiers, the app will include a map that will locate you on the trails (great for navigation) as well as the status and grooming report available at the touch of a button. There will still be a web browser based report that looks great as well.

Check it out here: https://www.nordic-pulse.com/ski-areas/BC/Caledonia-Nordic
