It has been a month since the last edition of our weekly newsletter was published! The time may be ripe for some new blood to assist with putting it together so we can move back to weekly publications. If you are keen then please contact Mark without delay. There are no special skills needed!
I sincerely hope that you are staying safe and healthy, and looking after yourself while we wait for the vaccine to be rolled out.
There is a lot of news in this edition (a month's worth!), which is a great reflection of how many awesome things are going on at Mowbray.

Help Needed for Nationals
We have placed an advertisement in the Men's Nationals tournament handbook, inviting participants to come to Mowbray after their games. We will have braai packs, drinks specials, music, etc.
On at least the Wednesday night, we will also have live music! That Thursday is a public holiday so it is a great night for a little party.
We need members to assist on these evenings please!
Salads need to be prepared, the fires need to be kept going, cutlery and crockery needs to be organised, etc. Please let Neil, Mark or Taz know if you can assist on one or more of the evenings. We need your help to make this a success.

Watching our members at other Clubs
Please all be aware that the rules prohibiting spectators at Bowls do not come from individual Clubs, WP Bowls or Bowls SA. They are current South African Law.
There is no leeway allowed in terms of the law as per the Government Gazetted regulations.
Please do not complain to other Clubs about not being able to watch Mowbray members in action. They are just adhering to the law and do not have any right to override this themselves. We are getting a bit of a reputation for this.
We understand that this is because we are normally the club that does the most to get out there and support our club mates - but please be patient and understanding!

- Bring your own sanitiser - and use it on every end
- Keep your distance from everyone else

WP Midweek
The WP Midweek is back on. It has been altered to sections of 6 teams to reduce the length of the tournament and allow Clubs to continue with their own midweek plans.
The round robin section of the tournament runs from Wednesday 19 May to 16 June with playoffs over the following 2 to 4 weeks (depending on the number of entries received).
Entries close at the end of the month so start organising now please!

Mowbray Hosting
It has been a number of years since Mowbray was a regular hosting venue for WP and National competitions, but the hard work that everyone has put into the Club over the last few years is paying off!
We have recently hosted round robin play for the WP Fives, WP Mixed Pairs, WP Pairs and WP Singles competitions - as well as play offs for the WP Singles. This weekend we will be hosting 3 sections for the WP Men's Trips, and on Sunday are hosting the playoffs for the Men's Trips.
Next month we will also be hosting the SA National Men's Championships for 5 days, from Saturday 8 May to Wednesday 12 May, including Pairs, Fours and Singles.
Special thanks must also go to those members who have given their time to act as the Competition Officials for Mowbray on the days, and those who have organised the catering for our guests!
Thank you to Neil, Paul R, Taz, Graham W, Wendy, Tria and Brian for all the work.

2021 Club Champs
There have been a constant stream of Club Championship games played over the last month - and it has been fascinating to watch!
Unfortunately quite a few matches are behind schedule. At the next Competition Committee meeting it may be necessary to have some players or teams forfeit their games if they do not catch up quickly. If you are struggling to schedule your game, please contact Mark or Taz ASAP to avoid this.
We urge you all to work with us on this. We had a late start because of Covid - and have much bigger fields that we have had in the past.

2021 Bowls SA Men's National Championships
The Men's Nationals are next month, from Saturday 8 May to Sunday 16 May, and they are in Cape Town.

We continue working to improve and enhance the Club and the surrounding grounds - and must single Neil out specifically for the work on improving the look of the Club so dramatically.

Vasco da Gama Taverna
We love to speak about the Mowbray gees - and Vasco's is the Cape Town taverna that embodies gees in Cape Town!
Established back in 1972, Vasco’s has been serving up some of Cape Town’s finest Portuguese cuisine and selling litres of Castle’s finest tank beer to go with it ever since.
Built from rocks retrieved from the old Quarry nearby (now known as Strand Street), this iconic pub is like no other. With opaque yellow stipple glass and black tiled flooring, Vasco’s has stuck to it’s roots within the fast-growing trendy district of Green Point.
Vasco's has renewed and increased their sponsorship of Mowbray in 2021 and we will soon be announcing even more improvements at Mowbray.
And they have promised us funds on an ongoing basis - by supporting us when we support them!
Every time you visit Cape Town's top Taverna, show them your Mowbray Bowling Club BSA card when you pay, and they will contribute 10% of your spend back to the Club!
So gather your friends, colleagues and family - and get down to Vasco's as often as possible!

Happy Birthday to all of you!
A note about member's birthdays!
One of the many tasks that needs to be undertaken at the club is wishing our members a happy birthday. This is more than just wishing them, it also ensures that everyone knows whose birthday is when - and we don't need to keep out own individual records about every other member. This used to be a relatively simple task at Mowbray, with a birthday list on the wall, but we have grown to 83 full, 12 dual and 10 social members - which already means tracking 105 birthdays.
Massive thanks must go to Bruno who undertook this task for a long time, and now to Otilia who is doing such a sterling job!
