One Health Researchers Evaluate Novel DNA-Chip-based Platform for
Rapid Characterization of Influenza A Viruses

Duke One Health researchers in the United States and China recently published their findings on the effectiveness the FluChip-8G Insight Assay in comparison to traditional virological qPCR and qRT-PCR assays for characterizing environmental, animal, and human influenza A samples. The authors assessed the accuracy of the new microarray assay in identifying influenza positive samples, providing explanations for what aspects of the test were successful, what parts could be improved, and what pieces held future potential.

One Health Researchers Apply a One Health Approach to Global Health and Medicine

In their article titled “Applying a One Health Approach in Global Health and Medicine: Enhancing Involvement of Medical Schools and Global Health Centers” published in the Annals of Global Health, authors Catherine Machalaba (EcoHealth Alliance), Dr. Gregory Gray (Duke University School of Medicine, Duke Global Health Institute), and others described how the One Health approach “offer[s] opportunities for synergistic expertise to address complex health threats.” Authors provide four main objectives for One Health involvement by medical schools and global health centers, which they say can “leverage existing resources” to improve resource efficiency, service delivery, and management of poor health status. Members of the DKU One Health Team Visit Jiangsu CDC

On March 12, 2021, members of the Duke Kunshan University One Health Team visited collaborators at Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention (JS CDC), which is the provincial public health agency located in Nanjing, China. The group met with Director Bao Changjun, the Chief of the Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Department, and other JS CDC experts. During the visit, the DKU One Health Team was invited to tour the JS CDC biosafety level 2 and 3 labs where provincial communicable disease testing programs are carried out. Three DKU undergraduate students who joined the trip reported “learn[ing] a lot about how the provincial authorities perform their duties,” “how to seek opportunities for new collaborations,” and “about the challenges and possibilities of future zoonotic disease research.”
