CWN Newsletter: April 30th, 2021
Dear CWN community,

In a year where so much has happened, here we are again -- mourning the loss of more unarmed Black and Latino men killed by police this week:
Andrew Brown, Jr (42), and Steven John Olson (59); and the shooting of Isaiah Brown (32) who remains in critical condition.

Less than two weeks ago, down the block from the trial of convicted ex-police officer Derek Chauvin, Daunte Wright (20, the same age as many of the students we teach and serve) was fatally shot by the president of the police union and Chauvin's fellow training officer, Kim Potter.

Last Monday, just 20 minutes away from campus at Alameda's South Shore Center, Mario Gonzalez (26) was killed in the same manner as George Floyd.

Brown Jr. was unarmed, sitting in his car when he was shot multiple times out of nowhere.

Olson was unarmed and unhoused, shot instead of being offered mental health services.

Brown was unarmed, shot by the officer who had given just given him a ride home, for holding a cordless phone.

Wright was unarmed, shot by police in a routine traffic stop for overdue registration and displaying an air freshener.

Gonzalez was unarmed, pinned to the ground with an officer's knee to his neck for more than 5 minutes for 'loitering' in an open shopping center and 'possibly being under the influence'.

These men have stories and families; lives that matter.

We invite you to speak their names, and to uplift, reference, and build upon:
Sincerely,
The CWN Steering Committee

A Journey of Hope from Earth to Mars

Elevating the Role of Women in STEM Education and Advancing
US-Arab Relations

Can a mission to study Martian climate inspire a generation of young Arabs to pursue STEM careers? How does the UAE foster widespread female involvement in STEM fields?

Join us on May 5 at 12 PM to hear about the Amal (Hope) interplanetary probe and how this ambitious mission is driving societal, economic, and educational development in the UAE. The UC Berkeley Space Sciences Lab (SSL) is a major knowledge transfer and educational partner in this historic endeavor, providing technical support and summer research internships to young, talented, curious Emirati college students over the last 6 years. Dr. Rob Lillis is the UCB lead scientist for the Hope mission. He and mission systems engineer Sasha Courtade will share their experiences alongside two of the bright young Emiratis who’ve spent stimulating summers at Berkeley studying Mars alongside SSL scientists.

Panelists:

  • Dr. Robert Lillis, Associate Director, SSL
  • Sasha Courtade, Aerospace Engineer, SSL
  • Maryam Al Hosani, Visiting Student (Research Experience for Undergraduate - Summer 2019)
  • Khalid Al Awar, Visiting Student (Research Experience for Undergraduate - Summer 2016)
About UC Berkeley Space Sciences Lab (SSL):
  • SSL is a world-renowned institution that employs space scientists/astrophysicists, engineers, and craftspeople with a wide range of skills to create new instrumentation and novel technologies for various Space Research projects.
  • SSL, with its unique expertise, builds and flies instrumentation on various NASA space missions and benefits from collaborations from universities, research institutions and space agencies worldwide.
  • SSL projects tackle fundamental problems in Atmospheric Science, Space Physics, Heliophysics, Planetary Science and Astrophysics. We invent, build, and operate our satellites from our laboratory in the Berkeley hills.
