The Ladle: Summer Edition

We're transitioning into summer mode, but that doesn't mean we're disappearing to the beach never to be seen again until September... we've got stuff happening!

Scroll to the bottom for summer jobs!

Our last official lunch serving is Thursday, April 15.

Next up:

  • Sexton students can win $100 in Brewery Market Money by filling out our survey!
  • Our Special General Meeting: you're invited! (And actually, we need you there!)
  • Volunteer Appreciation Picnic coming up and it sounds AMAZING.
  • Finally, our summer plans, want to join us?

Sexton Survey

Win $100 of Market money... that's like 7 bags of organic coffee! Or 33 baklava! Or 100 korean dumplings!

Sexton students can answer the survey here.

If you already answered the survey and gave us your e-mail, you'll be entered in the draw. Send it your Sexton friends and make them buy you 8 tubs of Deedee's ice cream if they win!

 Special General Meeting

Tuesday April 27th at 6:30 PM ADT on Zoom

All community members (which includes all volunteers and all Dal and King's students) are invited to attend our Special General Meeting on April 27th.

We need at least 10 general members plus our board to be there to have the number of people required to make votes! Please come if you can <3

Pre-registration is not required, but we will send you a reminder e-mail if you do! (Plus it makes us panic less about reaching quorum). Pre-register here

What we're going to do:
Fun End of Year Stuff!
  • Slide-show and review of the highlights of the year. What we did really well on!
  • Feedback results from our Sexton Survey!
  • A door prize including a Maple Sage Hope Blooms dressing, an organic double cocoa Feral Chocolate bar, and a cookbook - you choose between "Eating Wild in Eastern Canada" or "Kitchen Without Borders"
  • A Loaded-Ladle themed dance for you to learn during intermission
Technical End of Year Stuff! (May or may not be fun!)
  • Goal setting for next year, areas to improve, esp in terms of Anti-O, but also in terms of our values!
  • Vote to change the constitution and the by-laws to allow board member honoraria (pending DSU approval)
  • Vote to change the fiscal year-end to August in both our Constitution and our Co-op Bylaws.
  • Vote to add "signing the register of members" as part of the required actions to be considered a member of the Loaded Ladle (pending review)
Why is it an SGM and not an AGM?
Our AGM is moving from the Spring to the Fall - we'll have our AGM, including elections for our board, on September 21st, 2021.

Volunteer Appreciation Picnic featuring LADLE CROQUET
RSVP Required!!! RSVP to Oyku Su at
April 23 3-5 pm
Dalhousie Urban Garden
This event is for volunteers and board members. We will have picnic snacks, maybe make a crayon mural, and play ladle croquet: an innovative, rag-tag version using only kitchen equipment!

Please bring: a mask (required)
Optional: bring a frisbee, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, juggling clubs, poi, hula hoops, bocce ball...

Rain: if it's a classic Halifax drizzle we'll go ahead with it, if it's pouring, we'll e-mail everyone who RSVP'd to switch to the rain date (April 24).

Oyku Su and Su will be running:

Lots of outdoor activities, including:
  • picnic lunch and learns
  • small cooking lessons
  • backyard take-over garden projects
  • Maybe also some foraging field trips
  • or plant identification walks.
Some virtual activities, which might look like:
  • a reading group (Radish Reads Revival?)
  • virtual volunteering work (art, research, writing stuff!)

Our board will be working on:
  • hiring some new staff
  • figuring out an official policy around dairy/eggs/meat for sol serves
  • long term financial planning

There are openings on the board if you know you want to join!

Several of our staff will be off this summer, including Sage, Brennus, and Lauryne!

Summer Jobs

Feed NS has tons of Summer Youth Employment jobs posted (must be under 30 years)! The due dates are April 15!

The Ecology Action Centre is hiring canvassers - canvassing is not always fun, but I've heard they are nice employers.

The DSU has 5 jobs available

Sweet Affirmations

From Planned Parenthood Toronto and Teen Health Source

When I show myself compassion, I resist all the ways I have been taught to judge and police myself.

My relationships do not have to look the way I have been taught relationships should look.

I am allowed to be complicated and appreciated in my complexity.

Doing things 'just for you' is a great reason to do things.
