Allyship Part 2: A Call to Action for Lawyers in Supporting Directly Impacted Communities
Organized by the Alameda County Bar Association (ACBA) Barristers Section and the Charles Houston Bar Association. Co-sponsored by AABA, AILA, BALIF, CLA, EBLRLA, FBANC, and IABA.
Part 2 will focus on identifying action items for attendees to initiate in our respective communities through small breakout sessions. Moderators include our EBLRLA Directors April Smith and Armando Pastran.

This program examines the recent wave of violence and attacks on the API community. Speakers include Professor Russell Jeung, Aarti Kohli, and Betty Duong. Moderated by ACBA President Vincent Tong and ACBA Vice President Alice Cheng.

 Monica Othón Espinosa practices family law in the East Bay and greater Bay Area.
Monica has Bachelor's degrees from the University of California, Berkeley in Legal Studies and Economics.
She received her Juris Doctor from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law where she served as Executive Editor and Staff Editor on Hastings Law Journal.

Monica has been an EBLRLA member since 2016. She joined the EBLRLA Board of Directors in 2018 and was elected Vice President in November 2020.

What inspired you to enter the law profession?
As a child and grandchild of Mexican immigrants with limited education and financial resources, my family and I experienced and witnessed injustices in our community. Cultural, educational, language, and financial barriers left me feeling powerless to advocate for myself and my family. These experiences cemented my commitment to social justice, drove me to go to law school, and then to work as a post-conviction capital defense attorney, later a legal aid attorney, and now a family law attorney.

Advocacy
- EBLRLA proudly supports California AB 1576 which would require superior courts to allow attorneys to use the same lactation rooms as court employees. Read our letter of support here.
