Whakawhanaungatanga: Time well spent at Kaumātua noho

In late March, some of our kaumātua gathered with their Ngāti Koata and Ngāti Tama counterparts at the Vintner’s Hotel in Wairau for a wānanga on sites of significance to Ngāti Rārua.

It was our turn to host the event following visits to French Pass and Mohua hosted by Ngāti Koata and Ngāti Tama respectively in preceding years.

Our hononga team ensured our manuhiri received a relaxed welcome and shared kai on Friday night followed by a busy day of travel and learning on the Saturday. Arthur Phillips, Luke Lee and Lorraine Eade were our expert tour guides and Molly Luke and Hine Luke brought the whole event together..

ANZAC Day remembrances

There are a range of services taking place across Te Tauihu to commemorate the contribution and suffering of all those who have served. Lest we forget.

28th Māori Battalion commemoration in Motueka

If you're wanting to march, form up at 0615 at the Bowling Club carpark on Pah Street. Parade march-off at 0625 before karanga and the service at 0630.

Te Heke Tahutahuahi Commemoration

4-8 November 2021
We have been working with Ngāti Toa Rangatira and Ngāti Koata on a haerenga from Kawhia to Taranaki to retrace the steps of tūpuna in the renowned fire-lighting migration. Places will be limited and a call for expressions of interest will be made next week.

Te Hurihanganui Whānau Hui (Whakatū)

6 May 2021
Invitation for whānau with an interest in the Hurihanganui kaupapa being rolled out in the Victory Community (Whakatū) to come together for whakawhanaungatanga and introduction to the kaupapa by Poutama Pounamu.

Our evening will begin with kai at 5.30pm and will finish by 7.00pm so those with younger tamariki can get them home to bed. If you’d like more information on this kaupapa, please email us at admin@ngatirarua.iwi.nz or phone 03 577 8468.

Marlborough Schools Project (Wairau)

Introduction to Project Values and Workstream opportunities!
We have been working with Wairau iwi to progress the Marlborough Schools Project which will see the complete rebuild of Marlborough Boy’s College, Marlborough Girl’s College and Bohally Intermediate School.

We would like to invite our whānau in Wairau who have an interest in working in this project through one of the many working groups to attend a wānanga on Sunday 2 May. We will email out a calendar request shortly and if you’re interested, please ensure you accept and send a response.

Con-grad-ulations ...

Congratulations to whanaunga Renee Thomas and Delane Luke who graduated from the University of Canterbury in mid-April.

Renee is a trustee on our Rūnanga Board and has graduated with a Masters of Māori Indigenous Leadership with Distinction.

Delane graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Te Reo Māori and Māori and Indigenous Studies.

Working bee at Wairau Pā

8 May 2021
There will be a working bee at Wairau Pā Marae following the Ngāti Toa ki Wairau hui and whānau are invited to attend from 10.00am onwards if they're available. The working bee will finish around 4pm. Kai will be provided so please RSVP to Tara Scott, Secretary, toa@kiwairau.nz

Grant helps Kauri represent

Congratulations to our whānau Kauri Stephens-Semmens, who recently represented Motueka High School at the South Island Secondary School Touch Tournament in Ōtautahi.

On the first day of the tournament the team played four games, taking home three wins – ka mau te wehi e te whanaunga.

Kauri received the Ngāti Rārua Sport and Culture Sponsorship and Grant. Well done, and best of luck this year from us with NCEA and your sports.
