🐔 What’s the deal with Little Havana’s rooster statues?

Plus, Florida pulls the plug on the J&J vaccine and the state’s anti-protest bill makes progress.

Welcome to yet another Wednesday in sunny Miami.

We do things a little bit differently here in the 305. Y’know, like celebrate the end of our COVID-19 curfew with a New Year’s Eve-style countdown. 🎉

The New Tropic has yet to see footage of other cities pulling similar stunts, although we invite our more worldly readers to set the record straight in case there’s something we missed 👀.

Showy, characteristically ostentatious displays aren’t all we’ve got though — read on for more...

💉 Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the state is suspending the use of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine in accordance with federal recommendations. The one-dose shot had been in use at the FEMA-operated vaccination site at Miami Dade College's North Campus and several federal distribution set-ups across the state. If you’re looking to learn more about why J&J’s shot has been taken out of circulation, Lifehacker has a comprehensive rundown. (Miami New Times)

🗣 Florida’s controversial anti-protest bill passed a state Senate committee last week. Although the proposal still has to go before the full state legislature before becoming law, many expect it to be approved. Activist groups including Dream Defenders, Community Justice Project, and The Black Collective have asked the United Nations to make a statement denouncing the bill as a tactic “used to hinder pursuits of justice.” (Florida Phoenix / Community Justice Project via Instagram)

If you’re looking to make your voice heard by elected officials, there’s still several days to participate in Thrive305’s Civic Week. The countywide initiative by Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and The Miami Foundation is looking to engage residents and collect feedback on pressing local issues. You can learn more by registering online and visiting Thrive305’s Instagram page. ➡️ (Thrive305 via Instagram)

🌴 Islandia Journal has put its first issue up for pre-order. The new publication is a self-proclaimed “(sub)tropical journal of myth, folklore, history, ecology, and the paranormal” sharing visual art as well as written musings about Florida and the Caribbean. You can order Islandia’s debut and other goodies on its Big Cartel page and enjoy this trailer featuring music by local producer Nicholas G. Padilla. (Islandia Journal via Instagram)

✨  Never Normal Records has announced a cool new cassette collection. Collection Set 001: NYOTA IMARA | BLACK FUTURE compiles music by forward-thinking Black electronic producers and features songs by Suzi Analogue — the Miami-based founder of Never Normal Records — as well as HEAVEE, RaFia, and NO EYES. The tapes are available for purchase on the record label’s Bandcamp page and will ship out on April 20. (Never Normal Records via Instagram)
