FIRST QUARTER 2021
Welcome to the Village Alliance’s spring quarterly report that focuses on the retail environment in central Greenwich Village. The report provides a snapshot of the different neighborhoods within our district, highlighting their characteristics as well as recent retail openings and availabilities. As the Village and New York City rebuild itself after the pandemic, this information is more important than ever.

Finally, Spring!
After a long year of feeling the impacts of COVID-19 and its business-related restrictions, things are beginning to sprout again in the Village. Over 80% of businesses have re-opened as of April and we hope to welcome more as the weather warms up. The Village is beginning to see more visitors who live outside the area coming in for their shopping, dining and recreational needs, and foot traffic is also steadily increasing. There were about 400,000 visitors (described as anyone who does not live in the area, and visits for at least 15 minutes) coming through the Village district in March 2021. While still down by 50% from March 2019, this figure has steadily been on the rise since December 2020. As of February 2021, 81% of the residential population is back in the neighborhood regularly. Unfortunately, employees in the area are slowest to return, and that figure is down by about 60% of the pre-COVID number. We hope that by fall employee numbers will approach their pre-COVID levels.
Village Bucks Are Here
The Village Alliance has begun a number of new programs to welcome people and businesses back to the district. In April, the Village Bucks program was launched. Instead of purchasing a brand name gift card to be used at any chain or online business, Village Bucks promotes appreciation for Village businesses by shopping local. This electronic gift card is available at participating Village Alliance businesses with more joining every day. Visit the Village Bucks' site for more information and a list of businesses accepting the card. It makes a perfect Mother's Day or Teacher Appreciation gift!
New Recovery Grant Launched for Local Merchants
The Village Alliance is also proud to announce the Village Recovery Grant Program for local businesses. With $100,000 to give to Village merchants river to river, this program provides working capital for storefront businesses impacted by COVID-19. For more information, please visit the grant website. Applications are due by May 31, 2021.
