Building Community

Each month we will be sharing safety messaging from PBOT's Active Transportation & Safety Division that may be helpful to you or to share with your communities. We understand that safety looks different to everyone, and while these resources are not all-encompassing we hope that they are helpful as you navigate public spaces. April’s theme is Building Community. A strong and united community is a great way to increase safety.
Here are some ideas how to stay connected with your neighbors:

Abernethy Rain Garden

The City of Portland is installing a rain garden at Abernethy Elementary School on April 14-15. The community voted to approve the rain garden at the March 2020 meeting. Click here to see the plants that will be featured in the rain garden.

New School Psychologist

Welcome to Elaine Hidalgo, our new School Psychologist, starting April 12!

Hi! My name is Elaine Hidalgo and I've been working as a bilingual school psychologist since 2006.  I have worked in Arizona, California, and in Portland for 9-years. I was born and raised in Washington, D.C. My interests are hiking, cooking, reading, long walks, and watching movies.  I look forward to getting to know the Abernethy families, staff, and students, and working with you all!

Playground Rules - After School Dismisses

During Hybrid In-Person learning, we are asking that families depart the playground before or by 10:30 AM, each school day. The playground officially opens to the public (and Portland Parks & Rec) at 2:30 pm.

Please keep in mind, when on the playground/school grounds after dismissal, there is no staff that are monitoring students. With the large number of students in our In-Person session, the playground becomes very crowded and at dismissal this week we observed little regard for socially distant rules with the students. (Shortly after dismissal on Thursday a staff member counted 6 students crowded together at the top of the spiral slide playing.)

We know it's a very exciting time with school reopening and we love to see the students' enthusiasm as they find their caretakers and friends after school. However, we also want school to stay open and need everyone's help in ensuring that happens.

Thank you for your understanding and your help with this.

After School Last Minute Change of Plans

We are asking families with all the COVID protocols for dismissal we need to follow to please keep after school last minute change of plans requests to a minimum and for emergencies only.

Safety Improvements on Your Route to School

As you travel to school this spring, you may notice new projects were installed while schools were closed for instruction. Over the past year, PBOT has completed Safe Routes to School projects at 27 locations across the city, including the following:

  • high visibility crosswalks
  • speed bumps
  • ADA curb ramps
  • updated signage and median islands
  • and more!

Learn more about the projects and stay up-to-date by checking out our Safe Routes Projects storymap.

Hot Spot Recall

Verizon has been made aware that a very small number - less than .001% - of certain Verizon internet hotspots (devices called “Verizon Ellipsis Jetpack MHS900L and MHS900LS”) used for distance learning have significantly overheated and caused heat-related damage.

Verizon and the device manufacturer are investigating the cause of those incidents and we are working with Verizon to provide options for exchanging your device if you so choose.

Please call Verizon at 800-540-4263 to arrange an exchange directly.

To help promote the safe operation of all devices, the manufacturer suggests the following best practices:
     ● Use only approved charging cables, including the cable provided.
     ● Unplug your device once it’s fully charged. Devices should not be left plugged in continuously.
     ● When not in use, power down your device.
     ● Place your device on a flat, solid and sturdy surface such as a floor or table.
     ● Ensure your device is not covered for proper ventilation.
     ● Keep devices near room temperature when in use.
     ● Do not expose the units to extreme temperatures for extended periods of time.
     ● Do not expose the unit or its battery to water or other liquids.
     ● Do not drop the units and do not insert foreign objects into the battery or unit.

Technology continues to play a critical role in the educational process. If you have any questions or concerns about the technology issued to you, please contact your school for support.

Health and Safety Reminder - Consent Form

Dear Abernethy Families,

On March 30, we shared a message regarding a Health and Safety Reminder - Consent Form. As we shared, PPS is requesting consent from student’s families to test symptomatic students for COVID-19 onsite, during the school day. Your consent is optional.

Here are a few options to turn in a signed COVID-19 Testing Consent Form:

  • Install the Adobe software to enter your certified signature. The consent form can be signed with DocuSign. You can email them to the school secretary.

  • You can print this form at home, sign it and return the form to your school.

  • Schools can send a printed copy to parents/guardians upon request. Families can fill it out and return it with their students. Please reach out to your school secretary for this option.

Tests will only be given to test students who have a consent form on file or to staff who agree to the test.  You can find the forms by clicking in the links below:

The Student Success & Health Department in partnership with Multnomah Educational Service District (MESD) will oversee the implementation of the program following the COVID-19 Testing in Oregon’s K-12 Schools guidance provided by OHA and DHS.
