Short Course Racing - Lasers and Steve Rose, in his Sabre, get away cleanly

We had a rained out morning which cleared away despite the bleak forecast last Sunday to give us a few dry hours to run two short races in a light to moderate north easterly variable breeze.

RADIO SAILING
State borders have been gradually opening up – just in time for a number of Maylands Radio sailors to travel to Adelaide for the South Australian International One Meter State Championships. Over the years, this event has been a really popular one for radio sailing. Being fairly central, Adelaide draws competitors from around Australia for their major events. This year was no exception, with participants from WA, Victoria, New South Wales, ACT and Queensland, meaning that a fleet of 34 were in attendance.
IOM Start in Adelaide
Seven Maylands members attended the event on a sunny weekend in late March in Adelaide. We arrived on Friday, and settled into our accommodation. Unfortunately there was little wind, so a practice sail was not on the cards. We had a terrific night out at a local surf club on Friday, and turned up at Hart’s Mill in the Port River early on Saturday morning. The winds were light to moderate and the racing was really close. Unfortunately, as Saturday wore on, the local jellyfish decided to invade the course, leading to an early finish to Saturday.
Another memorable night out at the local pub on Saturday catching up with friends from other States. On Sunday, the conditions were similar. However, a highlight of the weekend occurred when a playful dolphin decided that these little colourful things in the water made good toys. See photo above. The dolphin gave a few boat a decent shove, and others got flipped around. The game went on for a good few minutes, much to the enjoyment of those watching.
Our results were pretty good, with Sean Wallis taking out the SA State title, Glenn Dawson finishing on the podium in third and Barry Donaher having a great regatta finishing sixth. Ross Bennett had a slightly disappointing event finishing in 11th although as usual, Rosco enjoyed himself. Edgar Vitte came in 13th and Cliff Davis 16th. Simon Ellis had a great result on Saturday but fell away on Sunday to finish in 21st.
All in all, a great weekend was had by those who travelled.

Maylands Yacht Club's First Club House
Past Club Patron, Terry Gaunt Snr, will tell the story of how the Maylands Yacht Club was formed after WWII in our upcoming book, Top of the River - Maylands Yacht Club.
It was Terry's father, Wally Gaunt, who was the driving force behind the return of organised yacht racing at Maylands and the formation of our present club from a wide cross section of sailing craft then operating from the Maylands Jetty. Terry has been generous with his time, writing up the story of how his father worked hard to establish, first the Sharpies, then VJ Classes at Maylands after WWII. "The old shed" (see above) - the result of much volunteer labour and donations of time, money and materials - became the club's headquarters from that time and right through to the 1970s when the present more substantial clubrooms were built. The photos above and below show just how close the first clubhouse was to the river.

The full story of how Wally Gaunt's infectious enthusiasm helped to organise a small but strong volunteer membership base to bring the club to life makes interesting reading and will be an important part of the full history of our club to appear in the upcoming book this year. Meanwhile, I will continue to present short snippets of the story over the coming winter months - the book to appear by the opening of the 2021/22 season - as we approach the Centenary of "The Maylands Cup" of 1923.
And as we approach another AGM, members are asked to reflect on the strong volunteer nature and history of our club operations - and are urged to make themselves available to assist in running our club in the future. See you at the AGM, 12 noon Sunday.
