~~~ Issue 19, August 2021 ~~~
Hi <<First Name>> Welcome to the latest issue of the Gazette.
It's been a wee while since the last full issue of the Gazette and a lot has been happening.
Over the last couple of days we have seen lots of localised flooding here in Glasgow due to very heavy rain - an extreme weather event. And these are happening elsewhere - wild fires are burning out of control across Turkey, Greece and California and flooding in many parts of India too.
On Monday the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change - the IPCC -  published it's latest report which was the first major assessment of climate change since 2014. All 195 countries represented on the panel approved the report and the findings were very clear - 'climate change is already affecting every region on Earth' and 'the role of human influence on the climate system is undisputed'. Governments and business need to TAKE ACTION NOW!
Monday also saw the ending of most Coronavirus pandemic restrictions as Scotland moved out of the levels system. It has been a challenging 18 months for everyone. The pandemic has impacted our mental and physical health and wellbeing and a recent report from Glasgow Centre for Population Health has shown health inequalities increasing across the city.
However one thing that the pandemic has also shown us is that, if needed, Governments can act quickly, decisively and collectively to address a serious threat.
With COP26 - the UN global climate talks - taking place here in Glasgow in less than 3 months those very same Government's need to show even greater leadership and determination to address the climate emergency.
One other very important thing the pandemic also demonstrated is the importance of community cohesion when battling adversity. Our collective action at a local level is crucial. There have been so many great examples in recent times - the community response to the pandemic, the success of the No Gasification campaign and more recently with the Save Whiteinch Library and Glasgow Against Closures campaigns.
In the next few months we will also see the end of furlough and reductions to Universal Credit. Undoubtedly we will need to show even more resilience, creativity, passion and compassion in supporting each other in our communities over the coming months.
Read on to find out how you can get involved locally as well as putting pressure on the Councils and Governments to take action for people, place and planet!
