Accessibility is another critical step in building inclusive spaces

An important but often overlooked part of DEI pertains to disabilities. In fact, DEIA has been suggested as a new way to include access in the title. On July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed and put into place. This law was originally modeled after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to provide equal opportunities for those who have disabilities. Many natural resource agencies work to ensure outdoor spaces are accessible for people with a range of physical abilities.

Provisions of ADA make a better, more inclusive space for people with a range of abilities.

The Diversity Drop is a weekly newsletter developed and distributed by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee in the Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management at Iowa State University. The goal of the newsletter is to advance the knowledge and understanding that will enable us to build a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive department, institution, and profession.
