Making Riverside a better place to live by making it a better place for nature.

MEMBER'S BULLETIN
APRIL 2021
STEP INTO SPRING
A big THANK YOU to everyone who celebrated the coming of spring with us this year.  We received over £500 in donations, which will be increased by Gift Aid payments from HMRC.  The money will help to keep  Riverside Naturally active and solvent. Our first purchase will be some organic chicken manure for the community orchard!
You can see more of the windows here.
Spotted in Riverside
This month a frog in Forth Crescent  and a stoat spotted almost in Riverside
at Cambuskenneth.
Beds for Bees
We have been working with On the Verge  to plant the raised bed at the orchard in a way that supports wild life in a sustainable way.  Many beds and planters use annuals which are not pollinator friendly because the popular varieties have been bred to have 'showy' flowers which prevent bees from getting to the nectar and pollen. Research has also shown that most annuals on sale in garden centres are treated by insecticides which remain long after they have been planted out. The raised bed is one of a number supported by RSPB to show what can be done using pollinator friendly perennials to produce colourful, attractive beds.
All the plants that were in the bed have been re-planted in and around the orchard and woodland gardens.

Drawing in Riverside
We would love to see some pictures from local chidren on our notice board.  Please download this sheet  and get drawing.
No Mow May

Plantlife's #NoMowMay campaign doesn't ask you to do much. In fact it asks you to do nothing at all....Just let the wildflowers in your lawn bloom and provide a feast for the bees.  If you would like to do something instead of mowing, you can sign up to count the flowers here
Wildflower Meadow

The wildflower meadow next to the orchard will be planted by Riverside naturally volunteers  from the first weekend in May. A small area will be temporarily fenced to keep the rabbits out.

Wildflowers are also being planted by Stirling Council Fisheries Team in the ARK area near the Old Harbour.
AGM 7th June 7.30pm

The Riverside Naturally AGM will take place on Monday 7th June at 7.30 by video conference. There will be a brief presentation on the achievements of the past year and plans for the coming year. Full details will go to members soon.

If you are at all interested in helping by becoming a trustee please get in touch. You don't need green fingers. We need people to help organise events, to help with publicity and to help with fund raising.

As the Covid 19 restrictions are eased we hope to resume regular working sessions in the orchard and woodland gardens soon.
We also have fingers crossed that Orchard Day will not be a virtual event this year.
More information in the May e-bulletin.

Keep Safe.
