JOVENCIO DE LA PAZ
New Editions Released

Jovencio de la Paz, top: Didderen 4.0, left: Didderen 4.1, right: Didderen 4.2; two and three-color lithographs, editions of 12, 30 x 22.25 inches, $600 each

Three new editions are available now by Jovencio de la Paz! Using the same visual language as his woven works, these lithographs use de la Paz’s algorithmic drawings to create moiré effects. De la Paz manipulates binary code to create drawings as plans for weavings, which he typically hand weaves on a loom; here those optically vibrating patterns are translated into prints. These moiré effects seem to move on their own, changing as the viewer changes perspective. From a distance, they optically blend into soft color fields, while up close they seem to pulse with their own breath.

De la Paz was an Artist-in-Residence with us at Crow’s Shadow last July, during which time he made a monoprint series, “No future Homeworlds” (Mountains), and completed three approvals to print for these editions. He has a Master of Fine Art in Fibers from the Cranbrook Academy of Art (2012) and a Bachelor of Fine Art with an emphasis on Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2008).

"The resulting weavings often display frenzied patterns: distorted, agitated, or corrupted. I revel in the conflicts that arise between the digital and the physical, between traditional forms and emerging technologies, and I am always sensitive to the presence of the ghosts in the machines I use."

WELCOME JENNI

Say hello to Jenni Viita! We have an extra set of hands in the studio for the next two weeks to help with the meticulous tearing for the chine-collé elements on Wendy Red Star's forthcoming editions. Jenni lives in Albuquerque where she completed her Tamarind training in 2019 and is originally from Finland.

Help us give her a warm welcome and check out her print practice on Instagram @jennivitta.
