TINA – There Is No Alternative

Navine G. Khan-Dossos, TINA, Digital Edition, April 2021. Published by The Showroom and Chateau International. Design: Mark Hurrell

TINA – There Is No Alternative is a new publication, co-published by The Showroom and Chateau International, that builds upon artist Navine G. Khan-Dossos' eponymous exhibition that took place at The Showroom between 5 June – 17 July 2019; her first solo commission in the UK. This publication takes as a starting point Khan-Dossos’ ongoing research into the complex context of the UK government’s development of pre-crime and surveillance policies, in particular Prevent, questioning the politics of representation and positioning of care that the strategies around these policies generate.

At the core of the project has been a cumulative act of questioning what an alternative to Prevent could look like; a shared process between Khan-Dossos and all those who become collaboratively involved. In this way, the work of the exhibition was a live process of research, discussion, sharing knowledge and critical thinking: a democratic process which this publication now seeks to extend further.

Over the next two months you are invited to read and respond to the digital publication of TINA. In this opening up of the editorial dialogue, your thoughts and comments will fundamentally feed into discussions informing the content of the printed edition of the book, which will be published in September this year. Your contribution is invaluable in this important moment as we wait to hear the findings of the UK Government's ‘Independent Review’ of Prevent in August, and ahead of the planned Parliamentary discussion in December 2021.

The Reflexive Editorial process is now open until 31 May 2021:
  • DOWNLOAD:  A digital edition of TINA – There Is No Alternative is available HERE
  • PRE-ORDER: TINA is available to pre-order for a special launch price of £20 + P&P.  The printed publication will be available in September 2021, after which the price will increase to £25. See HERE for further details
Printed copies of the first digital edition of TINA will be available to read at Church Street Library, and on-site at The Showroom for the duration of the public editorial process, until 31 May.

Texts in the book include new essays by artist Navine G. Khan-Dossos, writer & editor Rob Faure Walker, curator Lily Hall and with a foreword by our director Elvira Dyangani Ose.

Three in-depth Dialogues explore intersectional solidarity between those impacted by Prevent nationwide. Contributors who have engaged in these written exchanges include Sadia Habib and Hassan Vawda; Rachel Coldicutt and Tarek Younis; Shezana Hafiz and Azfar Shafi from advocacy organisation CAGE, and William Skeaping from Extinction Rebellion. A text by Alexander Massouras, revised from his exhibition review of There Is No Alternative for Art Monthly in 2019, is also included.

The book is designed by Mark Hurrell.

This is a very important moment for the book - it allows people to be part of the process of the publication, presenting an alternative to how we think about how information can be created and disseminated. This transparency and reflexivity is very much in response to the closed and opaque process of the UK government's own Independent Review of Prevent currently ongoing.

And with so many important voices choosing not to be part of that process, whilst I do not see this book as an 'Alternative Review', it is however a place where we can record and present our positions in a meaningfully critical and constructive way.

TINA Bibliography and Publication Resources

Navine G. Khan-Dossos, TINA, Digital Edition, April 2021. Published by The Showroom and Chateau International. Design: Mark Hurrell

The publication’s Archive presents a selection of the texts that were available to read as part of There Is No Alternative at The Showroom in 2019. They tell a story of Prevent over the past eighteen years through documents from many different sources – government reports, political speeches, Freedom of Information (FOI) responses and critical research literature.

The featured texts were gathered by Navine G. Khan-Dossos in dialogue with a network of new and long-term peers and collaborators. Visitors to the exhibition and contributors to the public programme were invited to respond directly to the physical archive by leaving annotations and notes on the documents. This reflexive process has been manifested within the publication as a visual palimpsest of voices and views.
  • CONTACT: If you would like to read any of the documents from the TINA archive in full, copies are available on request. Please note some articles may require further permissions on a case by case basis, in correspondence with the publisher. To enquire contact tina@theshowroom.org

TINA I–XXXLimited Edition

Navine G. Khan-DossosTINA VIII, gouache on 300gsm watercolour paper, 2020. Courtesy of the artist

All proceeds from this series of 30 unique paintings by artist Navine G. Khan-Dossos continue to contribute to the funding of TINA – There Is No Alternative and forthcoming programming.

These paintings make use of stencils originally created for the production and installation of the exhibition There Is No Alternative, based on the logos used to represent the Prevent programme across the UK. Overlaid on top of these original stencils are new logos collected in 2020 looking at the similarity of visual language between Prevent and the Covid-19 pandemic; sharing symbols of protection, care, but also threat, vigilance and resistance to contamination.
  • ORDER: TINA I-XXX, Gouache on 300gsm watercolour paper, 30 x 30cm. £200 each (Unframed). For all enquiries contact tina@theshowroom.org
