CHURCHILL COLLEGE E-BULLETIN
HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh
HRH PRINCE PHILIP,
THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH

The College was deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, Visitor of Churchill College.

HRH Prince Philip only recently stepped down from his role as our College Visitor, a position he had held since the College’s foundation in 1960, which saw him acting as an overseer of the College, allowing him to give advice on any doubts around the College’s powers under its charter and statutes, and to determine disputes arising between the College and its members. HRH Prince Philip’s role at Churchill was in addition to his 35 years as Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, from December 1976 to June 2011.

We send sincere condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family.

Black Students' Support Fund
TACKLING UNDER-REPRESENTATION
AT CHURCHILL

There currently exists an historic under-representation of British Black students at the University of Cambridge and Churchill. Data on ethnicity is collected as part of the admissions process and at present only 2% of current Churchill students identify themselves as being Black British. This compares with 3.6% of Cambridge UK undergraduate admissions as a whole. Recognising that Black British students of African and African-Caribbean heritage are underrepresented here, the College has launched a fundraising campaign to set up an endowed fund of at least £100,000 to support this group of students and drive up applications. If we are successful in raising the funds needed, this will support students from this background by providing means-tested undergraduate bursaries, or a one-year MPhil Studentship.

Improving our sustainability
SUSTAINABILITY UPDATE

The Sustainability Committee and related parts of the College have been very busy considering how to improve different parts of the College’s operation, as well as our investments’ policy. Our estate lends itself to some great opportunities to move towards more sustainable operation and, despite the pandemic, it has been possible to carry out substantial work across the site. Some examples of this work include: removal of natural gas reliance; using air source heat pumps; improving insulation and glazing; expanding the number of electric vehicle charging points on site; installing a solar power generation system; as well as increasing biodiversity in our grounds. After careful consideration of our investments, we have made a commitment only to invest with fund managers whose investments are aligned with the UN’s Six Principles of Responsible Investment by the end of 2022.

EVENTS UPDATE

The Alumni Office remains frustrated at having to once again postpone the dinner we had been planning to hold for our 1960–65 alumni this month. Those eligible should have heard from us with the news that it has been rescheduled to (fingers crossed!) Friday 24 September. In the meantime we are holding an exclusive online event on the night it should have been, Friday 16 April, for those affected. If you have not heard from us about this, please email the Alumni Office.

The other Reunion Dinner postponed from last year, for alumni matriculating 1988–92, is still currently scheduled to take place on Friday 10 July. We are waiting to see how the road map out of lockdown progresses, and hope to confirm plans by email some time next month. Please keep an eye out.

And finally...grad student gives TEDxWomen Talk

Earlier this month, Churchill Final Year PhD student in Physics, Claire Malone (G14), gave a TEDxWomen talk about some of the biggest questions in her field and how she negotiates her research with her physical disability. Claire analyses data from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, investigating the behaviour of the basic building blocks of our universe. Throughout her career, Claire has developed techniques to help her navigate her physical working environment through the restrictions of her cerebral palsy.
