A Message from the Associate Dean

As they say in Hollywood, that’s a wrap! It’s been a great semester, despite all of the challenges we have encountered, and I’m incredibly proud of all of you for staying the course and finishing strong! I’m also incredibly proud of our Honors College team: the amazing campus coordinators we have, our awesome support staff, and the top-notch faculty. During a time when the pandemic stopped so much, your momentum carried us forward. Thank you.
I hope you were able to attend our inaugural Spring Speaker Series with four outstanding experts talking directly to you, our honors community. We hosted an incredible STAR awards ceremony, where we honored 30 students (18 of whom are honors students!), two faculty/staff members, and one student organization. We are already hard at work planning amazing programming for you in the coming year.
If you are graduating, congratulations! You’ve made it! We hope your time at Perimeter and in the Honors College has been all that you’ve hoped for and more. We wish you great success in your next steps, and we hope you will stay in touch with us.
If you are just ending the semester of your first year, don’t think the Honors College takes the summer off! We will be hosting some virtual events this summer, so keep watching and reading the newsletter. The summer is the perfect time to reach out to us and build your fall schedule to include honors classes.
We will be offering honors study abroad trips next summer, so be thinking of that as a possibility for you if you’d like to go to Greece or Amsterdam. More on that in coming newsletters.
Regardless of where you are in your academic journey, we are so honored that you’ve chosen to spend part of it with us, and we hope to see you all again soon.
Best wishes for a happy, healthy, and safe summer,
Dr. Goodling

Student Spotlight: Esther Adewumi
|
|
Esther Adewumi is a high school senior and dual enrollment student in her first year at Perimeter College. Since her freshman year of high school, she has been involved in student organizations including Future Healthcare Professionals and Future Business Leaders of America, while co-founding two community service clubs: Crochet for a Cause and the Recycling Club. Last year she was awarded the Georgia Certificate of Merit – an honor reserved for high school juniors ranking in the top 5% of their class. In her spare time she loves to draw, sing, play guitar, edit videos, and delve into scientific research news. After graduating from high school, Esther plans to attend Mercer University to study Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.
Esther’s favorite Honors course at Perimeter has been Honors Macroeconomics. “As a young adult without much knowledge about economics,” she says, “I really enjoyed learning more about it! It opened my eyes to how money flows through the economy according to the human spirit.”
Asked about her inspiration, Esther says, “Although I have several wonderful people who have poured into my life, my most significant mentor and inspiration has been my mother. As an immigrant, she and my father had to overcome several obstacles to get to achieve success. My mother is a powerful woman of wisdom who has always pushed me to be the best that I can be. I specifically admire her hardworking spirit and strive to be like her in my academics.”

Student Assistants Wanted

University Assistantship Program
|
|
The Honors College at Perimeter is inviting high-ability students to consider an opportunity to work with faculty researchers through the University Assistantship Program (UAP). The UAP fosters engagement in faculty- or staff-mentored research, creative work, or other activities that further undergraduate students’ professional development. The university assistantship compensates each student up to $2,500 over the course of the fall and spring and is renewable for up to eight semesters, budget permitting. The deadline for faculty and staff to submit their interest is June 30th. Be on the lookout for a broadcast email, which will prompt interested students to apply.
More information is available on the University Assistantship Program webpage: http://honors.gsu.edu/assistantships/.

Honors Mentors Wanted for 2021-2022
|
|
The Honors Mentors Program is a competitive leadership opportunity open to any student who has successfully transitioned from the Honors College at Perimeter to the Honors College at the Atlanta campus. Honors Mentors work with the entire Honors team to advocate for the Honors College and support transitioning students through peer leadership, Q&A sessions, and campus and community activities.
If you are an outgoing, enthusiastic supporter of honors and a natural leader, and you are graduating this spring/summer, we're looking for you to join Honors Mentors for the 2021-2022 academic year. As an Honors Mentor, your insight, suggestions, and support for a fellow student looking to follow in your footsteps can be the difference between a good school year and a great one -- for both of you. More information can be found by tapping the button below. Email perimeterhonors@gsu.edu by June 1 to apply.

Georgia State Honors College Creates Perimeter Transition Scholarship
|
|
The Honors College at Georgia State University has created a scholarship program to help honors students at Perimeter College successfully transition to being four-year honors students on the university’s Atlanta Campus.
The scholarship program is made possible by a $10,000 grant from the Georgia State University Foundation’s Board of Trustees and a $10,000 match by the Honors College.
Starting in May, the scholarship program will provide up to 20 Trustees’ Scholars with a one-time award of $1,000 to alleviate the cost of transitioning for students planning to complete a four-year degree.
Eligible applicants must have completed at least four honors courses, be in good academic standing with at least a 3.3 GPA, and must be transitioning to the Atlanta Campus in Fall 2021.
Apply by June 1st at 11:59 EST.
A faculty recommendation should be submitted by June 3rd at 11:59 EST.
