Message from the President

Celebrating Together

Dear Community Leaders and Friends,

Dear Community Leaders and Friends of JLT,

March was a busy month for our Members. We elected our new League leaders; completed renovation projects at Capital City Youth Services and HOPE Community; distributed more than 21,000 meals in advance of spring break; and hosted our 5th annual golf tournament. We also did not allow Women’s History Month to pass us by without celebrating our talented and generous Members for all that they do for our community and neighbors.

Though the pandemic is not entirely behind us, we hope our efforts to safely transition to virtual, hybrid and in-person events will excite our members. In short, after indefinitely postponing last year’s event, we are bringing back our popular Bold Sips wine tasting. We are also aiming to bookend our League Year in May with a hybrid May Celebration, to properly honor our leaders, donors, and community partners. Stay tuned for details.

Lastly, April leads us into recruitment season. For more information about joining the Junior League of Tallahassee, click here or email join@jltallahassee.org.

Congratulations: New JLT Leadership

Martin Luther King Jr. said it best, “Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” Congratulations to JLT’s newly elected and appointed leaders!

Community Impact

21,000 Meals Distributed in Our Fight Against Food Insecurity

The Junior League of Tallahassee hosted its second Mighty Meals event on March 13, 2021. In partnership with the Second Harvest of the Big Bend, Riley Elementary and Sabal Palm Elementary, JLT was able to expand this event to two distribution sites which allowed our volunteers to increase the total number of meals distributed. Each participating family received a Mighty Meals “box” with enough nutritious foods to feed a family of 4, three meals a day for the entirety of the Leon County Spring Break. JLT is grateful for the sponsorship of the Florida Farm Bureau and generous partnership of the Port St. Joe Piggly Wiggly that were critical to this event’s success. This annual event is committed to serving Tallahassee families and is determined to join the fight against hunger. Want to help us make a difference? Contact us today at mightymeals@jltallahassee.org to learn how you can support next year’s event.

Bold Sips and Red Lips

Embark on a trip around the globe with the Junior League of Tallahassee and sample sips and bits at the annual wine tasting event, Bold Sips, Red Lips on Friday, April 16th at 7:00 p.m. at Governors Club.

The ticket price of $50 includes samples of 5 unique wines with food pairings, and tasting notes. Lee Satterfield, a local sommelier, will be in attendance to answer questions and chat about wine! Purchase your ticket before April 4th for a complimentary chance at our Wine Toss!

To ensure the health and safety of our guests, the following precautions will be in effect:

-Tickets purchases are limited to 75 attendees, which is less than 25% of the room's 350-person capacity. The event will have indoor and outdoor elements.

-Masks will be required whenever attendees are not actively eating or drinking.

-Temperature scans will be taken upon arrival; per CDC guidelines, an individual with a temperature of 100.4 or higher will not be admitted.

-We request that attendees who have traveled within the prior 14 days not attend.

-Hand sanitizers will be available throughout the venue.

-Food will be provided in single serve portions so there are no shared utensils; disposable drinkware will be used at each tasting station to avoid cross-contamination.

If you’re not quite ready to attend an in-person event, you can kick up your feet in the comfort and safety of your home while still enjoying the tastes of the Junior League of Tallahassee's annual Bold Sips, Red Lips wine tasting event. There will NOT be a League-created virtual component; however, tasting notes and suggested pairings will be included. Ticket price of $40 will include splits and half bottles of various wines.

CCYS Sensory Space Renovation

This month, the CCYS committee completed renovations to offer the children at CCYS a designated space for individuals with sensory issues that will help them reduce external stimuli and allow them an opportunity to develop coping skills for these experiences. Check out our before and after below!

Another HOPE Community Renovation in the Works

Many thanks to all the JLT volunteers who helped to renovate the Resident Care Specialist (RCS) office at Big Bend Homeless Coalition's HOPE Community this month. Because the space is in continual use 24/7, this was a fast-paced project that happened over one weekend. JLT volunteers cleaned, spackled, primed, and painted the new space, provided more functional furniture, and redesigned the layout to better accommodate the needs of the HOPE staff.

The Resident Care Specialists (RCS) at HOPE Community attend to the residents’ basic needs and living environment and support the Case Managers who work with the residents on their Individual Service Plans. They are often residents' first contact at HOPE Community--welcoming and orienting new residents, educating them about HOPE and community services, and encouraging residents to be proactive in meeting their social, psychological, and physical needs. Their interactions with residents seek to foster health, mutual respect, clear communication, empowerment, and positive self-regard. Community Partnerships & Donations

Sponsorships

To aid us in our mission of improving the lives of children and families in the Tallahassee area, JLT relies on the generosity of sponsorships and donations to enhance our community impact. When an organization financially supports the League, we support the organization in return by valuable recognition and exposure to both our members and the general public through online and in-person channels. The League consistently fosters strong partnerships with our sponsors, and we would love to work with you or your organization next!

To learn more about how you can become a JLT Sponsor, please click here to review our sponsorship or email Samantha Ferrin at sponsorship@jltallahassee.org for more information.
