UHOIC NEWSLETTER
Aug. 2021 Issue

The purpose of the newsletter is to share innovations and resources in online learning throughout the UH system, highlighting upcoming professional development opportunities, events, and latest news.

Welcome to a new school year! We hope that your summer has been restful and enjoyable. As students return to campus (online, face-to-face, and hybrid) and you begin a new academic year, we encourage you to take a proactive step (even if it’s a small one) to incrementally improve your teaching and support for your students. We appreciate your active engagement and participation in our spring professional development (PD) opportunities that reached over 700 participants collectively! Over the summer, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to make iterative improvements to our Fall 2021 offerings.

We look forward to your continued engagement and collaboration to increase quality online learning across our UH system this Fall semester! Remember, we’re just an email (uhoic@hawaii.edu) and/or consultation away and would love to hear how we could best support you.

Teaching Tips/Resources to Start the Year

Now that we’ve formally begun the transition to our “new normal” with face-to-face (F2F) classes and the continued support of online and hybrid courses, it’s a good time for a refresher on some helpful resources for teaching online!

Pilina (Relationship) Building Activities

Quick Brain Break & Pilina Iedas Title Page
The beginning of a class can be nerve-wracking for students. A great way for students to warm up and to get to know each and the instructor is through the use of pilina (relationship) building activities! Our UH Instructional Design Professional Learning Community compiled this ongoing Google Slides presentation of some “get-to-know-you” activities that you can use as a mental break from the course content. While the presentation slides are designed to easily be inserted for use in synchronous settings, these can quickly be converted for use in asynchronous courses as well!

Teaching Online Quick Reference Guide

Are you teaching online for the first time or do you need a refresher on various resources related to online teaching and learning? The UHOIC created this Teaching Online Quick Reference Guide for easy access to frequently referenced contacts, tools, and documents to support your online teaching (e.g., Laulima and UHOIC help, templates, resource documents to post in class, etc.). Check it out on our Teaching Online in Fall 2021 page with personalized PD pathways to meet your varied needs.

Recap/Highlights

Hoʻomaikaʻi (Congratulations) to our 2021 UH Online 5-Week PD cohort!

2021 UH Online 5-Week PD Cohort Zoom Meeting Screenshot
Hoʻomaikaʻi, or congratulations, to the 2021 cohort for finishing the summer PD course as part of the UH Online 5-Week PD program! It’s been an intense journey building accelerated courses in five weeks, but we all had fun as a learning community this summer!
1-2 Word Summary of 5-Week PD Experience: Good Times, Continued Growth, Engaging, Always Learning, Informative, Learning, Collaboration, Fun, Almost Ready, Resourceful, etc.
The cohort is now participating in the final UH Online Quality Course Design Review phase of the PD program.

5-Week Online Instructor Hui

During a faculty alumni gathering in May coordinated by Jordan Lewton (2019 alumni), faculty shared their experiences and insights after having taught their accelerated courses. They noticed that many accelerated students were motivated to learn and were successful in their courses. Some challenges mentioned were keeping up with grading and students keeping up with the pace of a 5-week course!

2021 Early College (EC) Professional Development

2021 Early College Online PD Presentation Title SlideWhat memories from your high school learning experience stand out for you? This is a question that we asked five instructors from across the UH system who participated in our inaugural Early College Online PD this summer. The intent of this seven-week learning opportunity was to focus on the unique needs of early college students, and the process started with empathy. Instructors put themselves in the shoes of 16-18 year old high school students who are taking early college courses to keep them at the heart of their course design.

Each instructor developed one asynchronous, OER course using our 16-week Laulima template to meet the unique needs of these students and increase their academic success. The best part of this PD, according to Michele Mahi, was “hearing the perspectives of Early College students and High School EC Coordinators.” The second Early College Online PD cohort is scheduled for the summer of 2022. If you are interested in participating, please email uhoic@hawaii.edu.

UH System LogoITS Approved Instructional Third Party Online Tools

When using third party tools in your course, such as YouTube, Google Docs, or Padlet, it’s good practice to provide the tool’s privacy and accessibility statements for your students to reference in case they need that information. You can find them via an internet search, but why not save your self some time and effort by first checking the ITS Reviewed Instructional Third Party Online Tools for Faculty on the UHOIC Resources webpage. The linked spreadsheet includes the privacy and accessibility statements of many commonly used applications and tools that have been reviewed and approved by ITS.

Tip: The spreadsheet of tools also contains the privacy/accessibility statement URL, which you can integrate into the Course Technology section of your syllabus.

Amara logoAmara

Do you use videos in your course that you do not own and are not closed captioned? Amara enables you to quickly grab the transcripts for videos available on YouTube, Vimeo, or other video hosting sites. And, because they aren’t required to be hosted on Amara, you can caption other people’s videos without infringing on copyright or needing to interact with the video owners.

Flipgrid LogoFlipgrid Updates: New Additions

Flipgrid’s recent update added some exciting new features. You can now add music from Flipgrid’s thematic playlists and the song will auto-adjust to the length of your video. Backdrops (a.k.a. virtual backgrounds) can now also be added to your videos. You can choose from Flipgrid’s built-in images or upload your own. Learn more on the Flipgrid blog post recapping their annual conference.

YouTube LogoYoutube

In 2017, YouTube rolled out a security update that generates new links for Unlisted videos. In an effort to make those older Unlisted videos more secure, YouTube set their permissions  to “Private” on July 23, 2021, unless you had opted out. More information can be found on this blog post: Update to YouTube Unlisted Links. Note that when set to Private, you now have the option to restrict access to specific people or “Let everyone at hawaii.edu view.”

Zoom LogoClosed Caption files for Cloud Recordings

If you utilize the UH Zoom Recording Service and save recordings to the cloud, be sure that you have both the options for “Audio transcript” and “Save closed caption as a VTT file” selected in the Cloud Recording section of your account settings. Those files will then be available in case you need them to make your recordings accessible.
