Statement of Solidarity
with the AAPI Community

 
In light of the rise in attacks and hate crimes against Asians, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders, the Ethics Center stands in solidarity with AAPI communities to condemn anti-Asian racism and violence in all its forms.

Love Your Neighbor and Get Vaccinated

The Ethics Center in conjunction with the California Catholic Conference, share guidance from the Catholic Bishops of California urging all Californians to receive a vaccination to prevent the continued spread of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. Together they have curated materials depicting Catholic voices in favor of vaccination and a webinar to help spread awareness of moral, ethical, and medical aspects of vaccination.

Marketing Interns Collaborate to Deliver Ethics Resources

The current team of four marketing and communications interns consists of Mackenzie Airhart '22, social media intern, Simitrio Arellano '22, graphics intern, Katherine Chen '22, web design intern, and Sahale Greenwood '21, journalist intern. The team helps create and distribute all aspects of Ethics Center digital marketing initiatives - including this newsletter!

transformational internships, fellowships, and other multi-discipline programs, helping SCU students address complex ethical issues as they become tomorrow’s leaders of competence, conscience, and compassion.

With your continued support, our goal is to double the capacity of these programs and to engage a diverse pool of students, including students who are the first in their family to attend college.

AI/ML for Clinical Decision Making: Should Patients Be Informed? 
12 Noon PDT Tuesday, April 14, 2021
Co-sponsored by the High Tech Law Institute and the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, Charles Binkley, MD, director of bioethics at the Ethics Center, discusses the ethical concerns of deployment of AI/ML clinical decision support tools into various medical specialties such as if patients should be informed when these tools are used to make a diagnosis or prescribe a treatment.

Ann Skeet, senior director, leadership ethics, is joined by business ethics interns Isabella Draskovic ’21 and junior Jonathan Sampson to interview Kirk Hanson, senior fellow and former executive director at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics about his recent book, and the ethics of corporate misconduct.

Associate Director, Margaret McLean makes the case for the J&J COVID vaccine in the quest for herd-immunity with H. Westley Clark, and Craig Stevens in this op-ed published by The Mercury News and the East Bay Times.

Charles Binkley and Irina Raicu were quoted on KQED talking about possibly confusing or outdated information on vaccination websites. Binkley was also quoted by Mercury News saying churches have a responsibility to encourages churchgoers to take necessary steps to personally safeguard against COVID-19.  

Nonprofit Pro quoted Joan Harrington questioning if tainted donor's money is also tainted. 

Director of technology ethics Brain Green was interviewed on The Philosopher & The News podcast talking about the damaging mindset of exploration, particularly the future of space exploration.
