Issue #222

WarnerMedia is to revive long-dormant animation brand Hanna-Barbera as part of a renewed push into the genre. London-based Cartoon Network Studios Europe will be renamed Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe. The heritage brand, which was responsible for animated successes such as The Flintstones and Wacky Races, disappeared in 2001 when it was absorbed into Warner Animation. With life (or resurrection), also comes death, as Disney+ has cancelled a scripted original for the first time, axing National Geographic show The Right Stuff after just one season.

Sports streaming service DAZN has secured more rights on a global basis, bagging Extreme E racing coverage in more than 100 countries. But it's not all rosy for DAZN: following its recent deal to secure all domestic matches of top flight Italian Serie A soccer (see The Amp, issue 221), its agreement to sublicense matches to Telecom Italia is being investigated by local regulator, AGCOM. Spain's top soccer league La Liga has broadcast a match free on live gaming platform Twitch. The move was designed to engage a new audience not reached by traditional pay TV.

In a largely symbolic move, Italy has decided to officially axe film censorship, removing the government's ability to censor scenes and ban movies. The change kills legislation that has existed since 1913. Film distributors will now self-classify movies based on existing age-appropriate brackets, with classifications reviewed by a new commission. In the UK, the government is increasing regulatory scrutiny of big tech companies like Google and Facebook with the launch of a new watchdog called the Digital Markets Unit. It will sit within the competition regulator.

ViacomCBS is pushing hard into Hispanic content with the purchase of Chilevisión TV and the Chilevisión content library from AT&T. In Europe a new cult movie streaming service, Cultpix, has launched, currently on an invitation-only basis. The service will offer more than 400 cult classic titles, ranging from Swedish Erotica to Japanese Kaiju monster movies and US 'slasher' films.

Finally, Sony is launching a UHD content streaming service through its Bravia TV sets. The platform, branded Sony Bravia Core, will enable Bravia TV owners to purchase Sony titles which can be streamed at a near-lossless bitrate, producing quality said to be close to UHD Blu-Ray Discs.

"Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but ViacomCBS said it will fund the acquisition from existing cash balances. The deal aims to expand VCNI's footprint in Latin America and feed new premium content to its expanding streaming business led by Paramount+ and Pluto TV."
"Titles range from American slasher films, Japanese Kaiju monster movies, Swedish erotica, Italian sword and sandal epics and Spanish horror. It aims to fill the gap between mainstream streaming services and more niche arthouse content providers, tapping into the legacy of genre films from before the year 1990."

"Bravia Core has been created with Sony Pictures Entertainment and is being pre-installed on the latest Bravia XR TVs. The new line features Sony’s Pure Stream technology, achieving near lossless UHD BD equivalent quality with streaming up to 80 Mbps."

Ampere in the news

"Ampere Analysis Research Manager Toby Holleran told TheWrap he expects Disney+ to “overtake both HBO Max and Hulu” in the first half of this year and “finish the year as the third largest streaming service in the U.S., with Hulu taking the fourth spot, and HBO Max taking fifth.”"
"“I’m sure [MLB] has been watching the in-game monetization of other sports games franchises such as Madden and FIFA with interest and is thinking about audience reach rather than premium sales in this case,” said Ampere analysis research director Piers Harding-Rolls."
