TE KAUPAPA; WHAREROA KI PEKAPEKA:
Archaeological korero at Iwi Trust Tari

As part of the construction earthworks of the Whareroa ki Pekapeka (MacKays to Peka Peka) Expressway between 2013 and 2017, an archaeological programme was in place.  An archaeologist and iwi monitors recorded over 200 new sites along the expressway alignment.  These sites have provided new information to contribute to the rich story of human occupation of the Kapiti Coast.

This illustrated talk will discuss the archaeological work undertaken, the analysis of the sites and the data, and what new information we have gained.

Archaeology in Kapiti-Horowhenua
Matai Whaipara a Kapiti-Horowhenua

Archaeologist Kevin Jones presents a talk on recent archaeology in Kapiti-Horowhenua.  Recent investigations in these districts include the NZTA Roads of National Significance and the new Manawatu bridge(s), work by Transpower, local government initiatives including the Manawatu LIDAR survey and a host of smaller developments such as subdivisions. Kevin will summarise current research on the earliest settlement of New Zealand, and will then review the new results about pre-European settlement, horticulture and storage pits, shellfish gathering and a host of new radiocarbon ages. The recently discovered archaeological sites in Kapiti-Horowhenua are mainly from the latest era of settlement previous to the arrival of James Cook and they represent a period when populations were at their maximum.
