We hope you have had a lovely Easter break and enjoyed this short working week.
The Downtown Programme achieved our milestones this week which we are super proud of! On Tuesday the northern footpath along Quay Street opened all the way through, and today we opened the full length of the new cycle way.
We will monitor the cycle lane’s operation and address any potential safety issues that may arise as people adjust to the new layout, but please do check for people walking, riding bikes, scooters, or driving and give way where necessary, especially at crossing points.
Also if you happened to be in town last night you may have seen the first testing of the gorgeous coloured LED strips in the new streetlights. There will be more tests later this month before they go live....we are on the home straight folks!

Quay Street enhancement
Princes Wharf to Britomart Place
|
|
|
Testing of the coloured strip in the new LED streetlights has now commenced.
The northern footpath is now open so you can once again walk from the Ferry Building all the way down to the Viaduct along the northern footpath. Three new Quay Street pedestrian crossings have opened, two at Lower Albert Street and one at Commerce Street.
The full length of the new cycle lane is now open. Cyclists & pedestrians please me be mindful of each other at all intersections; cyclists ensure you stop at pedestrian crossing points and pedestrians please wait at the yellow tactile line until able to cross.
The last of the rain gardens are now being filled with soil in preparation for the trees return to Quay Street. This will be from the night of the 18 April. There will be overnight road closures on Quay Street (Lower Hobson to Commerce Street) for five nights for the planting of larger trees. Detailed notifications for these closures will be distributed next week.
Traffic management (cones, larger fencing and traffic controllers) have begun to disappear where possible. Small fences will remain around the gardens until they are planted.
The new loading bay outside the Endeans Building is P20, not P5. Markings will be amended in the coming weeks.

Lower Albert Street Bus Interchange
|
|
|
Temporary traffic management (cones) will remain in place from the new red carpet middle crossing to Quay Street until 24 April when Lower Albert Street returns to operating at its full capacity.
Currently:
- New Lower Albert Street bus stop is open for Birkenhead bus services to the North Shore, routes 95B, 95C, 95G, 97B, 97R and 97V.
- NX1 and western bus services will return to Lower Albert Street 24 April 2021.

Te Wānanga (Downtown Public Space)
|
|
|
|
|
Seemingly floating above the Downtown Ferry Basin, Te Wānanga, the new downtown public space is an impressive feat of engineering. A design partnership with Mana Whenua elevated design thinking to deliver a project that expresses local identity, culture history and aspirations for the future.
|
|
|
Works continue around Te Wānanga's new deck to install the balustrades and leaners.
Over the next few weeks we will:
- complete the sandblasting of the new deck.
- commence installation of the heritage fence separating Te Wānanga from the northern footpath.
- commence installation of the custom designed street furniture, light poles, drinking fountain and new Kupenga nets.
All major works are programmed to be completed in late May and Te Wānanga will open to the public in June.

Ferry Basin Redevelopment - Stage 1
|
|
|
|
The Ferry Basin Redevelopment project is an integral part of the $350 million Downtown Programme, and will see the creation of six new berths in the Ferry Basin.
It is another step towards modern, consolidated ferry infrastructure for Auckland. It will have improved accessibility and greater operational flexibility, which will help accommodate increased passenger numbers.
The new Ferry Basin infrastructure is expected to be open and operational for ferry passengers early July 2021.
