The Full Moon in Bahasa Indonesia is called Purnama. Purnama in Bali is a special day for ceremonies and festivities. The Balinese believe that Purnama is a propitious day when Gods descend to the earth to bestow their blessings. And, Purnama is best time for religious rituals, with their intentions multiplied by one hundred. Every Purnama, people will wear traditional Balinese clothes and hold morning communal praying in their family Temple, and visit the village tempe of one of the hundreds of both small and large temples spread around the island of Bali.

Touching Essence™ is a multi-sensory, multicultural, Neo-shamanic healing art practice that combines the sense of touch, smell, sound and energetic vision.
Developed over the last 30 years at Esalen and in Bali, Touching Essence engages both giver and receiver to deepen awareness and presence. Inspired and informed by Ellen’s practice and teaching of Esalen® Massage & Bodywork, Touching Essence uses visualization and affirmation in support of desired outcomes.

The philosophy of Touching Essence is combined with an exploration of the energetic centers of the chakras (wheels of energy). These highly charged centers act as a conduit through which body, mind, and spirit interact as one holistic system. Imbalances in the chakras correlate with physical tension and discomfort. The intention of this course is to weave together a variety of techniques in order to address holding patterns in the body that result from these imbalances.
The focus is to access these powerful energy centers through a combination of touch, scent, and sound. Working with sound/vibrations, essential oils, and massage techniques; we will impact both subtle and deep layers of the body helping the individual to achieve a sense of integrated well-being.

This program offers not only education in massage theory, method, and relevant anatomy and physiology, it also offers an experience of the “bigger picture” of the Esalen approach: how to use simple human touch to support self-organization and healing within the whole person. Through lecture, demonstration, and supervised hands-on practice, students will be taught massage as a holistic approach to optimal health and functioning. The course offers 100 hours of comprehensive Esalen Massage experience, including relevant anatomical & physiological explorations that link theory to practice. Students will have ample time for massaging one another, emphasizing body mechanics, self-care, and innovation. The curriculum includes centering skills, Esalen long-stroke methods effective in whole-body integration, draping, detailed structural work, passive joint movement and gentle stretches, and techniques that energetically balance a massage. Students will learn communication skills for interacting with clients in a clear, compassionate manner, including education in difficult ethical situations that sometimes arise in massage practice.

People from all over the world come to Big Sur to learn this healing art, and now, among the flowering jungles and lotus laden ponds of Bali, we offer a 26-day Basic Certification in Esalen® Massage. This training will provide you with in-depth experience and practice in basic Esalen® Massage techniques, enabling you to give a professional full-body massage upon completion of the course. Your study of massage will be complemented by daily meditation, chanting, yoga, chi gong, ecstatic dance, and other moving meditation practices. You will experience in your own body the qualities of aliveness and flowing presence central to this method. The process of self-exploration is a key element, grounding this practice in the experience of your own body, thereby transforming mere technique into a true healing art. The atmosphere and culture of Bali fit well with our intention to teach this method as a path toward healing. The 175-Hour Esalen Massage training has been running every year since it’s first program in Fuzhou, China since 2015. This training serves as an opportunity for students to go from beginner to well qualified and certified massage therapist under the prestigious Esalen name with the highest quality of training.
To ensure quality, one teacher corresponds to a maximum of 16 students, and therefore should the number of students be 17 or more an additional Esalen Teacher Assistant will be added to the training.
The 175-Hour training is a combination of science and art. We deeply grasp the art of touch and massage through theory and practice with guidance from our master Esalen teachers and assistants. The result is a healing power in both your hands and your state of presence.
