DUT RECEIVES OVER A MILLION RAND FUNDING FOR COVID-19 RESEARCH

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has received funding of R1 012 500 to conduct research on SARS-CoV-2 (a virus which causes COVID-19) infection in HIV-positive patients with or without antiretroviral therapy (ART) in the sub-Saharan Africa. 

This is a great achievement for DUT as it is the first University of Technology (UoT) to receive a European Developing Clinical Trial Partnership (EDCTP) grant. DUT has collaborated with local and global universities in this project, namely: Walter Sisulu University in South Africa, Medical University of Graz in Austria, University of Oslo in Norway and the Lagos State University College of Medicine in Nigeria.

DUT HOSTS WEBINAR ADDRESSING DECOLONISING POST GRADUATE STUDIES IN AFRICA

Professor Fulufhelo Netswera, the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), hosted an informative webinar addressing Decolonising post graduate studies in Africa, recently, via Ms Teams. 

Welcoming the attendees was DUT’s Dr Melanie Lourens, who gave an overview on the presenters and their topics and introduced Prof Netswera. 

Prof Netswera spoke about the history of decolonisation and how some would argue that decolonisation cannot be recognised.

DUT’S ALUMNUS VOWS TO BREAK GENERATIONAL CHAIN OF POVERTY

“I do not want to be poor again,” says Ntokozo Msimango, a young entrepreneur who is a Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Bachelor of Education Alumnus. 

Msimango, the founder of Dlokovu Poultry Farm and Lawn Masters Gardening and Landscaping has been working around the clock to end the generational chain of poverty in his family.  

Msimango was born and raised in KwaChwezi in Inkandla, north of KwaZulu-Natal. Dlokovu Poultry Farm was established in 2020 and they specialise in growing broiler chickens.

PROVIDING ESSENTIAL SERVICES TO THE DUT COMMUNITY IN THE TIMES OF A PANDEMIC

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) continues to commend all its essential service workers for their dedication and commitment in providing services to the DUT community during the COVID-19 pandemic. DUT’s Communications team’s Waheeda Peters spoke to Deputy Dean Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr Pavitra Pillay whose journey at DUT began 24 years ago. 

Q: Kindly tell me your role at the DUT? 

A: “I have been employed as lecturer and then senior lecturer in the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Technology.
