Message from the Chair
Congratulations go out to SBRRB member Will Lydgate, who was spotlighted in our last Newsletter, and also spotlighted in an excellent write-up in the March 16, 2021 Pacific Business News, “Kauai’s Lydgate Farms Plans for a Post-Covid Future.” We wish Mr. Lydgate and his business much success.
This month, we are spotlighting SBRRB member Mr. James (Kimo) Lee. Kimo has been a Board member for two years and resides on the Island of Hawaii.

James Kimo Lee
- -Educational and Business Background
Mr. Lee received a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and has a Hawaii State Real Estate License. He is the current Director of Development at W.H. Shipment, Ltd., in Kea’au, and is a member of the Hawaii Leeward Planning Conference, Hawaii County Fire Commission, and board member of Catholic Church Land Asset Management.
- -How has COVID-19 impacted your line of work, if at all?
COVID-19 has had a significant impact on day-to-day and long-term work. The tangible changes are limited face-to-face meetings and contact with consultants, engineers, architects, surveyors, and attorneys. The crisis forced a technology education - from merging calls, using interactive platforms on the computer and telephone as well as relatively more complicated activities regarding virtual presentations.
The intangible aspect is that this situation is unprecedented in my lifetime. Due to the unknown, there is anxiety regarding preparing work from the way business and interactions previously existed.
- -How do you see your professional background to be integral in understanding small business rules and regulations?
Growing up in Hawaii, small business is ingrained in our lives. From the days of the plantations, family and friends all had small businesses (food, music, arts & crafts and other services), in addition to regular jobs to provide more income and to afford to live in Hawaii. While I have seen changes in the rules and regulations, overall, the changes have been good. Right now, tourism is the “engine.” However, when I was growing up, small business was the engine that drove the economy. It is important to balance the economy with diversity.
With professional experience in real estate, management, finance, and community, my understanding of small business rules and regulations affords priority in the rules and regulations that serve the small businesses and not hinder nor obstruct success of the business.
- -As an essential State Board, what do you believe are the important factors in the SBRRB’s continued existence?
The Legislature is comprised of various professionals and perspectives that may or may not advocate for small business. The Board is comprised of small business owners, employees, and associates that have the unique perspective of small businesses. Having a Board that advocates, monitors, and reviews rules and regulations ensure small business is treated fairly.
