A CEO-to-CEO Conversation About Advanced Reactors and Nuclear Waste

Deep Isolation CEO Liz Muller sat down many time zones away from Fermi Energia CEO Kalev Kallemets for a special episode of our podcast Nuclear Waste: The Whole Story. Kallemets' passion for helping his company become the first in the European Union to deploy an advanced nuclear reactor is palpable, as he shares why it's so important for Estonia to have a new reliable source of clean energy.

We have to do it, and we have to make practical, smart decisions to have nuclear reach its potential ...  which the people dreamt about when nuclear was originally developed.

— Kalev Kallemets, CEO of Estonia nuclear reactor developer Fermi Energia

Why Deep Isolation Offers Nuclear Waste Resources

In our latest blog post, Jessica Chow, Deep Isolation Technical Marketing Analyst and a nuclear engineering major, recounts how nuclear waste disposal and public perceptions around nuclear waste weren't really addressed during her formal education. A passion for helping others better understand these complex and important issues motivated her to curate a new Deep Isolation resource: About Nuclear Waste.

We hope you'll take a look and share your feedback or additional questions with Jessica@DeepIsolation.com.

Agreement with Dominion Engineering, Inc. Opens up Latin America Nuclear Waste Market

There are seven nuclear power reactors operating in Latin America, located in Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico, but, as is mostly the case worldwide, there's nowhere to permanently dispose of an estimated 7,000 metric tons of spent nuclear fuel.

The nuclear energy infrastructure and waste management considerations in this region make it an ideal candidate for Deep Isolation’s deep borehole technology so we're pleased to announce a new collaboration to serve this market.

On May 4 Deep Isolation and Dominion Engineering, Inc., a global leader in specialized nuclear fuel services and technology, announced plans to develop a comprehensive strategy for the management of spent fuel and high-level waste, including handling, transport, and final disposal in deep borehole repositories.

Sealing of a Deep Horizontal Borehole Repository for Nuclear Waste: Impact on Safety

Safety in Depth Part 2: Borehole Sealing Webinar Q&A

We recently held the second of two webinars during which we discussed our analyses of repository safety, with the most recent focusing on borehole sealing. At both events, we received many excellent questions and sincerely appreciate the interest in our findings.

The answers to the questions have been shared with the participants and posted to our website. Here's a fundamental one:

Q. Is the borehole seal a barrier? If so, how could the barrier capability be described and supported technically?

A. Borehole seals, plugs, backfills, and buffers act as mechanical, hydraulic, and chemical barriers. However, Deep Isolation's analysis (documented here) shows that a potential leakage through a poorly sealed borehole would be very small and does not impact repository performance. Even though no credit needs to be taken for effective borehole sealing in a safety assessment, Deep Isolation plans to properly plug, seal, and backfill the access hole to the repository.
