Empty Promises

Listen to Today's Devotion

This weekend, Steve and I will celebrate our 29th wedding anniversary. I know, we look way too young for that to be possible! On our wedding day, we made promises to one another. We promised to be faithful. We said we would love and cherish each other through the ups and downs of life. Soon enough, those commitments were tested. Would our love endure when we'd been up all night with a sick child, when an emergency surgery upends life, when the laundry baskets were overflowing or when we ran out of milk? By God's grace, we've walked through the happy and harrowing moments of marriage and stayed faithful to each other and those promises.

Unfortunately, our world has grown accustomed to seeing promises made and broken over and over again. We've all seen friends, family members, and politicians make promises that sound great but don't come true. As a result, it's easy to become bitter and disillusioned.

However, there is one who never makes a promise He cannot keep, and He never lets us down. The Bible says, "God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?" (Numbers 23:19). It's comforting to know that God keeps His promises because He is unchanging, all-powerful, and good. No one else, not even my sweet hubby, can do that perfectly.

Let me encourage you to look to Jesus - He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is the great "Yes" to all of God's promises. He will never let you down or fail to come through when you need Him.

By His Grace,
Tricia Whitaker
