ECHO Launches UNITE
What is your site's call to action?

NIH launched an effort to end structural racism in biomedical research through a new initiative whose acronym is UNITE.

As Director of the ECHO Program, Matt Gillman shares this message to the ECHO ISPCTN, 'I underscore the critical nature of this initiative to “improve and strengthen racial equity, diversity, and inclusion across all facets of the biomedical research enterprise, and expand research to eliminate or lessen health disparities and inequities.'

Dr. Gillman sees at least three avenues for ECHO to carry forward these principles:
1. Ensuring a diverse and inclusive workforce. Our diversity supplements—this year on the ISPCTN as well as the Cohorts side—is one example.
2. Maintaining diversity and inclusion of our participants. This is a common challenge made even harder by the pandemic’s effect on disadvantaged communities.
3. Addressing research questions toward social and racial equity. Both the effects of the pandemic and the awful treatment and deaths of persons of color in the past year highlight the importance of solution-oriented research in this area.

The ECHO Program Office is looking forward to working with all of you on these crucial issues, including discussions in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Working Group.

Via a Request for Information, NIH leadership would be most grateful for your perspectives and recommendations on the UNITE program. You may submit comments through the submission website by April 9, 2021.

Study closeout begins
Data collection for the iAmHealthy study has concluded. Congratulations to the sites and entire iAmHealthy team! As we enter the closeout and data clean and analysis phase, very preliminary data suggests that that the study met two (retention and blinding) of the four primary objectives. The study team is working on several publications that are in various phases of development. Please watch for data analysis updates and consider other publication ideas.
