A Christian presence in every community

11th April 2021                                                    The Second Sunday of Easter
His  Royal  Highness,   The  Prince  Philip,   The  Duke  of  Edinburgh
In this moment of sorrow the Lord is in our midst and consoles us with his word:
No eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived,
what God has prepared for those who love him.

Blessed are the sorrowful; they shall be comforted.

Into your hands, O Lord, we humbly entrust our brother Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
In this life you embraced him with your tender love,
and opened to him the gate of heaven.
The old order has passed away, as you welcome him into paradise,
where there will be no sorrow, no weeping nor pain,
but the fullness of peace and joy
with your Son and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

Most merciful God, whose wisdom is beyond our understanding,
surround the Queen and the Royal Family with your love,
that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss,
but have confidence in your goodness, and strength to meet the days to come.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Church will be open for Private Prayer today, Saturday 10th,
and on Sunday 11th April from 2.00pm until 4.00pm.
David Bignell was honoured to be one of this year’s recipients of Maundy Money from the Queen.  Due to coronavirus restrictions, the annual Royal Maundy service was cancelled and the coins had to be sent by post.   They were accompanied by a letter from the Queen, personally thanking community stalwarts for their work to ‘enrich the life of their neighbours’. David was nominated by Bishop Paul for his services to church and community.   Here he is seen with the two bags of special coins: The first contains a small amount of ordinary coinage which symbolises the Sovereign's gift for food and clothing. The second purse contains Maundy coins up to the value of the Sovereign's age.  Congratulations David on this well-deserved recognition!
Welcome to a trial of a new format of less frequent notices.

Services in Church from Sunday 18th April:  There will be only one service each week, on Sunday at 10.00am.
Due to restrictions on numbers you will need to book in for any services you would like to attend.  To do this please contact Ann (one of our churchwardens) by phone on 07835 949128 or email:
churchwardens@attenboroughchurch.org.uk
 When you come to a service, please observe the following instructions for everyone’s safety:

  • Please wear a facemask.  If you come without one, a small supply will be available in church.
  • Please use the main entrance only; the other doors will not be in use.
  • Please arrive no more than 10 minutes prior to the start of the service and keep 2 metres apart from anyone in front of you on the path up to the door.
  • Please bear with us once inside the building as seating will be allocated by the stewards in order to keep safe social distancing and limit the amount of passing by other people as we come into and go out of church.
  • Please note that the congregation are not allowed to sing.

Thank you:  We had over 125 visitors to church on Good Friday for takeaway hot cross buns and hot drinks.  Thanks to all who helped with this in any way.
Thanks also to Alistair Langton for all his work on the prayer and reflection stations used to create a meditative journey around the churchyard over the period of Lent and during Holy Week.

Our Charity for April is The Gideons International,
an Association of Christian business and professional men and their wives dedicated to telling people about Jesus through associating together for service, sharing personal testimony, and by providing Bibles and New Testaments.  While they are often recognised for their work with hotels, they also place and distribute Scriptures in strategic locations so they are available to those who want them, as well as to those who may not know they need them.

ust a reminder that if you give to The Leprosy Mission before 24th April, the Government will match your donation.  If you do make a donation, please tick the box to say that you have “seen” a talk by The Leprosy Mission.  You can then link the donation to us here at St Mary’s.

Maria Batchelor:
I’m raising money for the MS Trust’s Mission 100. When I was diagnosed with MS in 2015, I was amazed at the love, support and visits I had from members of the church and also through the MS Trust’s information for those newly diagnosed with MS. I can’t imagine how scary it must be for someone being in the position I was 6 years ago without visitors etc. In February I decided I would support the Trust (incidentally 100 people a month are diagnosed with MS hence Mission 100) by cycling 100km on my static bike in March. I completed it on 31st March but you can still sponsor me by visiting https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/maria-batchelor5. Thank you.

Southwell Minster Photo Competition:  During the lockdowns of 2020-2021, many of us spent more time in the outdoors, walking in local parks, along country footpaths, or sitting in our gardens.  We had time to discover new, wild places on our doorsteps, we puzzled at plants and insects we did not recognise, and we watched quietly when we encountered birds or wild animals.  Some of these sights were so special, we captured them on our phones and cameras, creating lasting memories of nature’s extraordinary secrets.  Inspired by their Leaves of Southwell project, Southwell Minster invite you to enter their photography competition and share your own special lockdown discoveries.  But hurry! - entries need to be submitted by 15th April.  Click here to find out more.

Share the Services from St Mary's:  If you would like a DVD or CD of some of our services and Reflections, either for yourself or to pass on to a friend or neighbour, please contact Barbara in the office and we will get one to you.
Anniversary of Death:  Each month in our services we remember with thanks those whose anniversary of death falls in that month. If there is someone you would like us to remember, please send to Barbara in the Parish Office their name and the month you would like them remembered.
A prayer for this week:
Lord God, give us the confidence to ask, seek and share your gospel and never to be afraid of sharing your peace and encountering your joy.  Amen.
  • the work of the gospel locally and globally, that people may come to know the love of God and the joy of relationship with Jesus;
  • those living and working on Milton Crescent;
  • those anxious, worried, lonely and despairing at this time;
  • all those working to alleviate the impact and suffering caused by Covid-19 virus throughout the world;
  • the work of Gideons International;
  • all those involved in the search for a new vicar for the parish;
  • all those in the parish and congregation or known to us individually who are ill or struggling with other difficulties, including at this time: Brenda, Patricia, Jean, Chris, Claire, Rachel, June, Barbara & Bill, Esme, Elaine, Sally, Dorothy and Mike.
  • The family and friends of Audrey Peglar.  Audrey passed away this week.  Audrey had been a Christian influence in the area for all her life and was a member of Christ Church, but helped out loyally with St Mary’s choir on many occasions.
