Happy Friday! I’m Martin Reynolds, the co-executive director of the Maynard Institute. With our Spring membership campaign in full swing, I wanted to take the opportunity to tell you a bit more about who we are and why your support is so crucial.

The Maynard Institute is funded in part by members of the journalism community, and in turn we want to serve the journalism community. Our team is committed to helping news organizations do better journalism by advocating for diversity and belonging because diverse newsrooms are more trusted by more readers. We do newsroom training, virtual events and professional development programs for journalists of color.

The theme of our Spring membership campaign is rebuilding. There are endless opportunities to rebuild these days — we’ve been rebuilding our messages and goals during a time of racial reckoning in journalism and asking news organizations to dismantle structural racism and rebuild into institutions of belonging. 

No matter the situation, rebuilding requires all of us. That’s why we’re asking you to become a Maynard Institute member. Supporting diversity and belonging in journalism is an act of civic participation, a way to strengthen the country we live in.
