Preventing Evictions in Rural Arizona

Presenters:
Joanna Carr 
is the Research and Policy Director at the Arizona Housing Coalition. With a background in direct services, Joanna spent 9 years working with households experiencing homelessness, including as a case coordinator for the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program in Maricopa County. Joanna is now involved in a number of projects that center around local level advocacy, education and collaboration relating to ending homelessness. 

Hillary Evans is the Resource Strategy & Community Engagement Supervisor for Crisis Response Network, overseeing the Community Engagement Team for 2-1-1 Arizona. The 2-1-1 Community Engagement Team works to improve access to care and service delivery for individuals and families through improved coordination between 211 and community entities focused on housing, healthcare, economic and food security. Hillary has worked in the homeless and affordable housing field for over 14 years.

April 14 webinar:
Pain, Substance Misuse & Treatment: Science Practice and Prescribing Guidelines

Presented by Dr. Melody Glenn, this Zoom webinar is open to anyone in Arizona interested in the topic, including those who already provide treatment for opioid use disorder and are interested in learning more. People who work in emergency, primary, and behavioral healthcare in Gila, Graham, and Mohave counties are especially invited to attend. One continuing medical education unit (CME) has been applied for. If approved, this CME would be free to you.

MEZCOPH’s Border Health Service-Learning Institute - 2020

Compared to past versions of the course, Border Health Service Learning Institute (BHSLI) 2020 was radically different. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the class was held online during the fall semester rather than one week in August. While the course format was new territory, it held true to the core goal of exploring the role of advocacy in the intersections between public health, migration, and economics on the U.S./Mexico border.

Evaluation of the Nurtured Heart Approach To Parenting to Improve Attention and Hyperactivity/Impulsivity in Children

Presenters:
Velia Nuño
 is trained as an epidemiologist and social worker. She has more than 20 years of experience in project design, implementation, and evaluation in school and community settings. Recently she led a study with 104 parents to evaluate the Nurtured Heart Approach to parenting to improve inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity in children. In 2019, Dr. Nuño led the Adolescent Research Team of seven students to conduct a qualitative needs assessment using focus groups and observations to gather the perspectives of Arizona youth. 

Bridget Murphy has almost three decades of education and experience in behavioral health and educational research, services, and supports. She has held positions in academic institutions, community-based and private sector organizations. Dr. Murphy’s principal experience is in behavioral health: substance use, mental health including attention deficient hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and sexual health for culturally diverse children, youth, and families in various settings.

DOL Grants for State Apprenticeship Programs – April 26.  The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) will make 30 awards with total funding of $87.5 million for new or expanded Registered Apprenticeship Programs that train individuals aged 16 years and older.  DOL intends to fund up to $40 million to states that will adopt diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.  Eligible applicants are U.S. states and territories.
CDC Drug Free Communities – May 10.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will make 100 awards of up to $125,000 each to support efforts to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth.  Eligible applicants are community coalitions that have not previously received a Drug Free Communities grant.
CMS Community Health Access and Rural Transformation Model (CHART) – Extended to May 11 (from March 16)
The Arizona Economic Recovery Center aims to enable more Arizona cities, towns, counties and nonprofits to win competitive grants. An initiative of Local First Arizona, The Center provides pro bono resources to qualifying entities that can increase community capacity, improve collaboration, and assist with managing grant-related projects, including:
  • Researching and simplifying available grants and stimulus opportunities 
  • Community and project facilitation
  • Project Management
  • Capacity Building
  • Strategic Planning
  • Technical Assistance
  • Accounting

May 1, 2021 - U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control - NCIPC Preventing Violence Affecting Young Lives (PREVAYL) The purpose of this funding is to address multiple forms of violence impacting adolescents and young adults, particularly in communities with high rates of violence, by implementing prevention approaches with an emphasis on the outer levels of the social-ecological model (i.e., community/societal levels).

AHRQ Toolkit for Managing Sepsis Care.  The Agency for Healthcare Research Quality (AHRQ) created this resource specifically for rural clinicians.  The toolkit includes case scenarios, templates, and checklists to improve the quality and safety of managing sepsis, a potentially life-threatening infection. 


HHS: Health Disparities by Race/Ethnicity During the Pandemic The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) released a report with existing data on rates for infection, hospitalization, death, and vaccination by race and ethnicity. The brief discusses the drivers of these disparities, and offers policy recommendations for achieving health equity.


New: Coverage to Care Telehealth Resources. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released two new resources to support the use of telehealth.  The first educates patients on what to expect during a telehealth visit, and the second supports providers in how to conduct a successful telehealth visit and how to keep up to date on Medicare and Medicaid telehealth payments.  Social media graphics are also available.


CDC: Urban-Rural Differences in Drug Overdose Death Rates, 1999-2019. A new brief from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports on a higher rate of overdose deaths due to heroin and cocaine in urban areas.  In rural areas, however, overdose rates were higher for natural and semisynthetic opioids, synthetic opioids (excluding methadone), and psychostimulants with abuse potential.
