Clemson Elementary students visit historic church at SWUStudents visit Freedom's Hill

Joy Bryant presented an engaging, interactive history of Freedom’s Hill Church to students from Clemson Elementary School during a Nov. 23 visit to the campus in Central. She told the story of Adam Crooks, the church’s young minister, who loved God and hated slavery. Freedom’s Hill, originally built in 1848 in the Snow Camp community of North Carolina, was relocated to the university’s campus in 2000. Bryant is executive director of alumni and constituent relations at Southern Wesleyan. More than 100 students visited Freedom’s Hill as part of a social studies field trip that also included the Central Heritage Museum, Collins Ole Town and the Central Railway Museum.

New Staff Council
At its October meeting, the board of trustees unanimously supported the formation of a staff council and the appointment of a staff representative to the board. The purpose for creating this council is to not only provide staff with board representation, it is also to facilitate a greater sense of involvement and communication and to foster a culture of trust between the staff, faculty, administration and Board. This initial organizational meeting is open to any interested staff (defined as employees below director level) and is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 14, 1:30-2:30 p.m. in Teter Hall. Videoconferencing will be available for all learning centers. This first meeting will be key to determining the level of interest and involvement among staff eligible to participate and to discuss a suggested first-year agenda, as well. This is an exciting year of transition and the opportunity and momentum for change is tangible. Become a part of helping to make this new level of staff involvement meaningful.

We will also have computer systems setup to provide any demonstrations you would like or help you solve any minor issues.

London trip update
Due to a lack of sufficient interest, The “London in ’12” trip, originally scheduled over spring break, has been postponed, according to Chuck Mealy, organizer of the trip. Mealy added that a decision will be made as to whether the trip will be rescheduled to May Term or sometime next year. Future plans will be announced in SWU News at some point in the Spring, Mealy said.
