Our beer garden opens April 17th and Tin Roof Pizza will be here too!

We are all vaccinated and excited to open the beer garden again!  We open on April 17th at Noon and Tin Roof Pizza will be joining us as well from Noon until 4 pm.  We are also announcing new hours with the opening of our tap room.  As of the 17th, our hours will be:

  • Monday:  3 – 7 pm
  • Tuesday and Wednesday:  Closed
  • Thursday and Friday:  3 – 8 pm
  • Saturday:  Noon – 7 pm
  • Sunday:  2 – 7 pm

Thanks to everyone who has supported the bottle shop these past months while we navigated COVID.  The bottle shop has been such a success we have decided to keep it going in addition to our tap room!  We have an amazing selection with over 150 beverage choices.  As always, if there is something you would like to see, just let us know!

We have a great selection of beers on tap and lots of non-alcoholic beverages too.

Above is a peek at our current line-up.  It is subject to change.  We hope to add a couple more selections.

All COVID safety precautions will be followed.  Masks are required. Dogs are welcome and must be on a leash.

We have a goal of being a zero-waste business.  It would help a lot if you could bring your own beverage container!  If you plan to enjoy the delicious pizza, bringing  your own napkins and silverware would be greatly appreciated.  We are working towards installing a dish washing facility and until then (and even then) bringing your own beverage containers would be most appreciated.

This month’s theme is Happy Birthday to the Male Owners of the Canteen

Happy Birthday John and Greg!

Every month we pick a theme and select beverages to highlight that theme.  April’s theme is Happy Birthday John and Greg!  They are two of the 4 Canteen owners and they both have April birthdays.  What better way to enjoy a birthday than selecting a few of your favorite beverage to enjoy and share with your community.

Here are a few of their picks.  To see their entire collection, visit our online store!

We're planting a food forest and native plants and trees

Growing food organically and planting native plants and trees is one of our passions.  We are a public house and we want the community to enjoy locally grown food so we are busy planting.  We have planted 2 peach trees, rhubarb, blueberry bushes, strawberries, and are planning on much more as the weather warms up.  We have also planted 2 Red Bud trees and 1 Dogwood in the garden for shade.

We planted bee balm, a native flower.  Our dear friend Susan Sunflower brought us native Green and Golds and planted them at the base of our shade trees and also blessed us with a couple of Oconee Bells, a rare native flower.

Michael Plauche of the Transylvania County Bird Club brought us 4 bird boxes for our food forest as well.  We have found nesting birds are one of the greatest forms of natural pest control.

We received some gorgeous hanging baskets from our neighbors Lisa and Cindy, for the garden and soon you will see beans, tomatoes and cucumbers growing from those.

Linda brought us a spider plant and we have that enjoying the sunshine in one of our windows.  These are some of the best plants for indoor air quality and we love it!

Rob and Su brought us a beautiful flowering hanging basket!  What beautiful abundance!

We are so grateful to all who are helping us expand our beautiful garden.  It is truly a community garden.  Thank you so much!

We look forward to more community members contributing to our food forest.  Do you have something you would like to contribute?  We would love to hear from you!

Fonta Flora Grodziskie Review

By John Wiseman, one of the owners of the Canteen.

Hello brew fans.

Always excited to taste what the folk at Fonta Flora is brewing we ordered in some of their Grodziskie.

Fonta Flora Brewery of Nebo, NC in collaboration with Live Oak Brewery of Austin, TX have introduced their take on the old Polish wheat beer that uses smoked wheat malt. Traditionally oak wood was used but brewers have been experimenting with custom smoked malts. Fonta Flora acquires smoked malt from local supplier Riverbend Malt House using pecan wood to go for a regional flair.

The can art pulled me in. Beer flutes with sausages in them. Okay, confession, I have been known to consume a brat or smoked kielbasa in my my days. That said, is the sausage in a beer glass a reference to the origins of the style or the character of the contents within? I say Yes!

Pouring into a flute as in the artwork I see a light golden beer with copious bubbles producing a three quarter inch bright white meringue like head, after a long settling time lacy remnants lay on top and cling to the glass. Very effervescent. Raising the glass revealed the light wheat beer nose with a hard to catch early hint of smoke. Then as the level gets lower and the beer has more time to open the smokiness comes through much more. A crisp mouth feel, not as expected from the appearance of the head. Maybe it is suggestion from the can art, but after multiple tastings the flavors were a pleasant surprise. It actually has the taste of a well cured sausage and a smooth smokiness. I like it!

At 3.2% ABV, Fire up the grill and put on some veggies. No meat required.

Here is a fun new non-alcoholic-beverage

We are always looking for refreshing non-alcoholic drinks.  We recently ran across Kul-Mocks.  Here is a description from their website:

OUR MOCKTAILS

Creating KUL MOCKS wasn’t just about the beverages, it was about creating the experience of drinking a cocktail, minus the alcohol. Hand-crafted with simple ingredients and natural flavors, KUL MOCKS ready-to-drink alcohol free cocktails are flavorful and fun! Using natural ingredients with a touch of real cane sugar makes them 50 calories or less without sacrificing any taste.

We have them chilled and ready for you to enjoy.  Bring your own beverage glass and help us towards our goal of being a zero-waste public house.
