News

From the associate minister of religious education

By Dan Harper on Apr 10, 2021 08:31 am

With more and more people being vaccinated in California, the state government is moving towards reopening. So what about reopening plans for UUCPA?

First and foremost, reopening plans for adult programs will be different from programs for children and teens under age 16. Until we have a vaccine for those under age 16, I’m expecting we’ll have to be more careful with that age group.

At its April 6 meeting, the Children and Youth Religious Education (CYRE) Committee and I drafted procedures for reopening in-person children and teen programs. These recommended procedures will be passed on to the Board of Trustees, for their consideration at their April 22 meeting. At this point, we’re planning that we’ll be offering both in-person and online Sunday school beginning in the fall. As of now, we’re planning that in-person Sunday school will be outdoors, masked, and socially-distanced. But we also plan to monitor the rapidly changing situation carefully, taking our cues from the best practices we see in nearby schools, preschools, daycare centers, and after-school programs.

I have to admit that I haven’t been paying as much attention to what’s been going on with adult programs at UUCPA. There’s also a group planning out hybrid worship services (both online and in-person worship) at UUCPA. There’s also a group figuring out how we might resume in-person small group meetings for adults. Watch the UUCPA Web site for more information.

I’m not going to make any promises about when we might resume in-person programs. COVID has fooled us too many times in the past. But I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to reopen sometime this calendar year.

Ecojustice Camp still has openings for middle schoolers

By Dan Harper on Apr 10, 2021 07:50 am

UUCPA’s ecology camp will run from June 15 to July 2 this year. The group for rising gr. 3-6 (this year’s gr. 2-5) had just one opening as of April 8, but there’s still plenty of room in the middle school group (rising gr. 7-9, this years. gr. 6-8). You can register online here:

Story for All Ages videos

By Dan Harper on Apr 10, 2021 04:45 am

The popular videos for kids that have been appearing in this year’s worship services are all online. Originally, the videos were posted to YouTube, but now that YouTube is adding more ads, all videos will gradually be migrated to Vimeo, an ad-free video hosting service. To help you find your favorite videos, there’s now a Web page with links to them all: Stories for All Ages

This Web page also has short biographies of all the stuffies who act in the videos, along with photos.

What’s with the new fences around campus?

By webadmin on Mar 20, 2021 07:03 am

New fencing to keep out marauding Easter bunnies?

No, just the next step in adding temporary fencing around the UUCPA campus to discourage free-range and sometimes vociferously maskless passersby (really, passers-through) during the pandemic.  Sunday services are online for now, but we still have staff, preschool children, and shelter guests on campus.

CYRE thanks Buildings & Grounds and its volunteers for fencing off safe areas on their workdays!

Worship Services

UUCPA offers one worship service per week, on Sundays, starting at 10:30 am. The Sunday morning service can be attended via online video conference using the following link: The services are also streamed live on the UUCPA Facebook page: facebook.com/uucpa (no password needed).

Please check the upcoming services web page for any changes: https://www.uucpa.org/worship/upcoming-worship-services/

While the Coronavirus keeps us physically apart, we would like to bring UUCPA children and youth together using online meetings. Our online safety policy says we must have a current registration before your child can participate in online classes. Please register here: https://forms.gle/1w1CA3TJ6wXBuqMv6

Our 4 Big Educational Goals

  1. Have fun and feel part of a community
  2. Gain basic religious literacy
  3. Learn skills associated with liberal religion (public speaking, singing, basic leadership, interpersonal skills, etc.)
  4. Prepare children to become UU adults, should they choose to do so when they're old enough to make their own decisions
