Quarterly Update January-March 2021

Hello from Powering Potential (PPI)! We hope that you are doing well. Much has happened at PPI since we last wrote in January, thanks to the generosity of our wonderful supporters, so let’s get started…

Latest News

New Board Members

Powering Potential is delighted to welcome two new members to our Board of Directors. Board Secretary Philip Brandt is a Vice President at Deutsche Bank. Laszlo Schneider, CPA, is a Senior Manager with KPMG, based in the firm’s National Office. Their breadth of business experience, enthusiasm for PPI, and willingness to reach out on our behalf will reap incalculable benefits for years to come. Welcome aboard, Phil and Laszlo!

Happy Anniversary to us!

PPI is celebrating its 15th Anniversary this year. In this time, we’ve completed 93 installation projects in Tanzania and the Peruvian Amazon, to the delight of 34,000+ students and teachers. We have a brand-new brochure that highlights our accomplishments, and we hope you’ll take a look.

Please continue to support us, as we forge ahead.

SPARC Lab in the Serengeti

In our last newsletter, we reported that funding was completed for the implementation of a SPARC (Solar-Powered Access to Raspberry Computing) lab at the Rigicha Secondary School in Tanzania's Serengeti District. We’re now delighted to say that the equipment has arrived. It will be installed in April and the training will begin thereafter. Onward and upward, as we like to say at PPI!
Warmest thanks go out to our donors and friends at Sullivan|Strickler, which featured Powering Potential in a recent blog post on LinkedIn. We appreciate the shout-out!

Our Founding Director, Janice Lathen, has had a busy quarter! On January 24, Janice gave a remote talk to the children of the United Church of Dorset and East Rupert (VT) Sunday School about the good work of Powering Potential. On February 26, she attended a UNESCO virtual meeting that focused on Education for Sustainable Development, which is one of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

On March 3, Janice had the pleasure of participating in a virtual town hall hosted by PPI’s esteemed sponsor, Segal Family Foundation and its sister foundation, Focus for Health, entitled, "Shifting the Power: Who Gets Funding Matters." The webinar focused on shifting support from U.S.-based organizations to ones that are located in the home countries of aid recipients. You can view the webinar here.
Powering Potential extends condolences to the family and to the supporters of John Magufuli, President of Tanzania, who passed away on March 17. He is succeeded by Ms. Samia Suluhu Hassan, Tanzania’s first female president.
PPI extends special thanks to our friends at Level Up CRM, a Salesforce consulting firm, which provides us with excellent pro bono database support. We are grateful to co-founders Brian Wickham and Theodora Kostova for all of their help!
Moving onward and upward!

Next on our agenda:

  • At the Soitsambu Secondary School in the Ngorongoro District of Tanzania, we’re gearing up for a SPARC+ upgrade as soon as we complete funding. Please support Soitsambu.
  • We are planning to bring Powering Potential to the Nanenane School in Morogoro District, which ultimately will serve a constituency of 820 students and 51 teachers.
  • Sister Cities International, has let us know they are thinking about collaborating with us on a project to implement our award-winning SPARC program at more schools in Tanzania. We're excited by their show of interest and we'll keep you posted!

All of this is made possible by wonderful friends like you. In our special anniversary year, please help us to celebrate by making a donation, and THANK YOU!
